Why it’s Important to Have Thick Skin as an Automotive Technician (Vlog#5)

thick-skinned that’s what I want to talk about today i’m brian ESSEC from how to automotive and I wanted to talk to you a little bit about how how tough this job is being an automotive technician is not for everybody and what I mean by thick-skinned is as you’re working outside you’re working in the environment like hot one day where it’s a 100 like I’m in Southern California here where it’s a get 110 degrees out and you got to go get get in a car and and the heaters stuck on and you got to diagnose that you know and or it just can make for long brutal days and then if you like working cold climates you know you know how you know working in a cold it can be brutal on the hands especially and so the thick skin comes in and it’s like mentally thick skin you know like you’re gonna you’re gonna come across all kinds of situations frustrations growing pains of learning the job the industry so you have to have really really thick skin and you have to be patient for this type of work and it’s not for everybody this automotive career is definitely not for everybody and uh and you know like one of the things you got to do to have longevity in this field is you have to really take care of yourself too so like a lot of like myself included I I got cancer from this job you know and directly from the chemicals and the brake dust and all those type of things so and I’ve seen number of guys over the years get sick from this to this type of work and and but I also see those same type of people that they they smoke cigarettes they they don’t eat healthy that type of stuff you know so in this day and age if you want to have longevity in the automotive industry and automotive careers you really need to take care of yourself and then that that’s eating healthy wearing your respirators your earplugs eye protection I wear long sleeve shirts and gloves latex gloves like non-stop I rarely take the gloves off because anything to come in contact with the skin it gets absorbed in the skin and gets absorbed in the body and in you know we we we as automotive technicians come across a ton a ton of chemicals on a day to day basis and I I’m sure the body builds up some tolerance to that type of stuff but after a while you know it can break you down so my cancer was in my throat my neck and I’m the nonsmoker and I developed a tumor in my neck and and it came directly from you know these chemicals I work with and I touch and I around and I breathe and and I was very fortunate not to get it into my lungs and I’m very fortunate and b5 almost 5 years out now cancer-free but it kicked my butt for a while there and and and also when I came back to work after cancer treatment you know I was physically not you know I was tore down pretty bad so it took me you know almost 6 months 6 6 to 8 months just to physically get back into shape where I can keep up and work work so if you’re not in physical and top physical health you know it’ll your paychecks will definitely suffer your product productivity will be way lower so you know just simple simple things you know Eagle healthy wear your safety equipment you know your your your dust mask or your respirators or definitely your eye protections and your whatever your you know your situation may require you know and and protect yourself that way one of the simplest things you can do is wear the latex gloves you know one you know the ladies don’t like the blankets you know so I liked how I take my eat my gloves off and go home and I use my hands my fingernails are you know normal and I’m not disgusting yeah so I can go out to a restaurant and not have to worry about stain hands and stuff like that so that’s a nice factor but and I also wear long sleeve shirts like I said and that helps protect protect my skin from getting in contact with a lot of these chemicals and stuff like that I mean it’s not a hundred percent but it’s better than nothing I wear my you know dust mask when I’m doing brake jobs and stuff like that you know and I thought you know when I taking drums off you know get on a big cloud it freaked us you know so one of the techniques I use and actually like it’s worth brake pads and rotors and drums you can square them down with just a little soap and water before you take them apart and that reduces the brake dust that goes into the air and atmosphere and reduces what you breathe in and by a large amount and that right there alone to save you you know in the long run you know from reading that stuff in I try clean the shop out I try to sweep the floors instead of use the air blower blow the full of floors out and blow the dust all up in the air and stuff like that I mean sometimes you got to do that to get it out of the cracks and corners of the shop but but uh sweeping is definitely a much better way than blowing the air around you know and a much safer way for everybody and then you know I personally like it our shops I don’t like smokers you know I’ll just say it I don’t like some ochres and you guys it’s 2016 it’s time for you guys to quit that stuff you know it’s just it’s just a nasty habit and make it’s just nasty you know and you know and there’s enough cancer spreading stuff into a job on the job as it is to have smokers come around it add that on top of it you know you know no I don’t mean to offend you guys that smoke and I know it’s not you know something you may have gotten into when you didn’t know better and you know you’re addicted to it or whatever but you know I care about myself and I care about my body and I care about my my people I’m surrounded around and with and I I don’t like smoking and they don’t like some ochres and I’m a mother my mother’s a smoker and I you know and I tried I tried I’ve been trying for years to get her to quit you know but I’m not here to preach to you guys to stop smoking or whatever you guys know though you know you know it’s not good for you not healthy for you but uh you know just wanted to say you know take care of yourself in this field this industry because in the long run it will beat you down at Witts it’s rough on the body it’s tough on the hands you can get arthritis so one of the things I do is I do like a lot of yoga my girlfriend she’s teaching me these all these yoga techniques and stretching and and and it really making a difference in my day-to-day life and how I feel and how I how productive I am and and those are some simple little tips to help keep yourself healthy and you know and the healthier you are the happier you are the more likely here to produce ours and make money and then you can it just it’s a trickle-down effect you know the healthier you are the better your life will be it’s hard to be happy when and when you’re not healthy and I’m Brian ESIC from how to automotive and then that’s my tip my rant or whatever you want to call it and I like to thank you guys for watching my videos and thank you again
