Who Killed the British Motor Industry pt 2

let’s see of ex-employee [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] how bad was it the scientists there were 42 plants at what the late seventies 42 – 42 different plants so he was very difficult because each of those people had pride effectively in their own plant as I say in it everyone was against each other in our time there were three British Leyland dealers we were doing Morris the main dealer had everything and there’s a front rover dealer at the other end and whole loaded ears within ten miles of each other and they’re doing most in droves Morris is always something all fighting for the same old fighting the same business people at Longbridge saw themselves as rusting still then and people at Morris I’m the shop floor saw themselves as Morris still then people and tribes or themselves that try and print so and so but that was obviously not everything no it was obviously not gonna move but that’s how people themselves or themselves go back to this size issue because you were saying Longbridge how many people work that well is its biggest as far as I recollect they had 27,000 people work in there what did all these people do not a lot we used to have a fabulous Rotem museum you spent hours on it the first day I arrived there I remember being led mr. final five jobs but reg wants to see you when he does it unfortunately the sleeper oh that’s what you some guy should drop UPS program in the same way that British Leyland made cars back then I wouldn’t have told the director what I wanted to say and he wouldn’t have told the cameraman where I was going to stand and the cameraman wouldn’t have bothered focusing properly cuz he was gonna get paid anyway whether it was gonna focus or not there was no sense of community living I guess it was like being in a tower block everyone under one roof but everyone pleading different lives the people in flat 46 to the house would you like to sleep with the guinea pig but the most amazing thing is that five all of this meant that the various bits of british leyland ended up competing with each other take a triumph mm for example its most deadly rival was its brother the rover mm then there was the mg which went head-to-head with its sister the Triumph Spitfire [Music] and then there was the greatest battle of them all [Music] the Morris marina versus the austin allegro deciding which is the worst is like deciding which leg you’d most like to have amputated I’d give the marina one lock for having a good turning circle and I’d give the allegro one mark for having a canopy ride as you bounce over the curbs only then I’ll give the allegro one more mark for effort I mean at least they did try to be veterans so there you have it the marina wins it is worse than the Allegro which must make it pretty damn close to being one of the worst cars ever made when you look at one go by now do you feel a sense of pride now just enough think compromise is still running aware of this problem BL took the marina to Italy to the great styling house called in town a lizard look can you inject it with some glamorous and bizarre some Flair great accept what they got back Oh was even worse I have here a book which was published to commemorate the 30th anniversary of detailed design and in it you can find all the great cars that they’ve designed over the years the Alfa stood the DeLorean Zarate Boerum Iraq Gulf the BMW m1 the Passat and they even own up to some cars that really aren’t very good like the 1983 Hyundai stellar but the strange thing is that there’s no mention at all of the Morrissey tell they own up to tractors and buses and vans and trucks but doesn’t a single pension anywhere of a car that was named in their honor it was that bad [Applause] but styling was the least of Beals worries they also have to deal with hopeless design shoddy workmanship and biblical unreliability well we looked at it like this the car heavy is guarantee and it was guaranteed to go wrong yeah the problem is you know where you have a strike car we should be left no car went out with no trim the one side all right or us about having wired up yeah that was of course it doesn’t major problem clouds haven’t been lying again that’s right so nothing was a certain things work certain things dead lifts of the indicator on you know all foreign CAD weren’t once all the horn blue you know somebody came back to said let’s peace of mind doors gone a significant it was a dent piece of filler just come out you know where there’s a spacious repaired is brand new car when the Americans said the headlights had to be a certain height off the ground in order for cars to be sold there and and everywhere other car manufacturers at okay will read his on the front end but what did mg do it just put blocks under the suspension mountings to bring get the whole car run on enough spoiler handling I became an MPV
