Undergraduate student placement with Jaguar Land Rover

I’m Nikki I’m a fourth year material science and engineering student at the University of Sheffield and I’ve been working in a materials innovation team of the materials engineering department at Jaguar Land Rover I’ve had an amazing summer I’ve got involved in speaking to suppliers been accountable for my own projects been given a lot of responsibility in terms of technical work as well delivered reports to a high standard so I’ve really been involved in a lot of functions we use a whole range of materials steel aluminium plastics wood leather and really they’re integral to producing a vehicle we actually encourage students to come in and work with us for a defined period in this case with Nick he was five months it’s really important to get the next generation of engineers coming through understanding that the business environment learning as they work through the placement and taking that back into their academic experience but ultimately to come back round as engineers of the future a lot of people seem to think that materials engineering is mainly metallurgy or composites and plastics but it’s really so much more than that some of my projects have involved working on the real car project which has made me using recycled aluminium in car body structures I’ve also worked on a project on new car smell I’ve also been working on trim materials like levers and PVCs and I’ve been working on more design based materials as well we’re really looking for students to have a great deal of enthusiasm have some ideas and input that they can put into the placement but fundamentally so they get something out of the placement that we get something from the placement as well yeah application process was fairly complex there was an initial screening to see our interest in the business and whether we understood the automotive industry there was also a few further psychometric tests and behavior tests to see how we would perform after that was all passed there was an Assessment Center which involved a group exercise and a face to face competency-based interview everyone was quite based on my behavior in the way that I acted with people around me and how it be in a work environment the relocation process was fairly simple at Jaguar Land Rover managed to put all the summer interns in touch with a student halls in Coventry so it’s been great living together with our summer interns that are in exactly the same boat as me I think the difference between working and university is that I feel like you’re challenged a lot more at work but even though the work has been quite challenging in terms of the projects that I’ve been involved in there’s such a great support structure in place and everyone’s here together it’s not about just getting the best grade it’s about getting the best product for the customer that is out there so everyone’s in one big team working towards the same goal I’ve learned so much more than I can even begin to imagine I’ve learned technical skills I’ve learned to work with people I’ve learnt to work with such a diverse group of people across different companies different departments and materials engineering different teams as well within Jaguar Land Rover so it’s really been great in that way that I’ve really developed myself as a person but also my engineering knowledge there are a number of benefits that come from a student doing a placement and I certainly seen that with Nikki in terms of greater confidence in the workplace getting to know the people building the contacts and understanding the technical aspects of what we’re doing within the projects the skills that I’ve got from doing my course at the University of Sheffield I’m doing a place where Jaguar Land Rover has meant I have a really strong materials face to build on and I’m hoping that I can work this up to a good engineering position with an industry
