Tips to Increase your Efficiency as a Flat Rate Auto Tech

alright I’m the fly right master and today we’re talking about your efficiency as a flat rate technician what I mean by that well I’m going to give you some tips and advice on how to maximize your hours basically how many hours you can turn in the same amount of time by just some little tips to help you increase your efficiency now the stuff I’m talking about is not the stuff that is outside of your control I’m not talking about parts deliveries I’m not talking about incorrect parts I’m not talking about getting authorizations from customers to do the repairs I’m talking about stuff that was that is within your control not outside of it so we’re going to start off organization of your tools now I’m going to link a couple videos in the description one is going to be a video I did on cart efficiency your your roll card efficiency why I set my cart up the way I did I’m also going to link a tour of my current cart I set up my cart is specific reasons I have no diagnostic equipment in my car all I have is repair tools tools to do the job the reason I do that is I want to pull my cart up to a car and basically not leave that car until I’m ready to go wash up go test drive it so watch those videos give you a back story on how I set up my cart and all that now obviously specialized tools are going to be in my tool boxes those I’m going to grab as I pull up to the car so just little things like that will immensely improve your efficiency is lack of time when we back and forth to your tool box all right next one we’re going to talk about magnet race magnet Trey’s muffin tins boxes a lot of guys will take a box and like transmission bolts they will draw the outline of the transmission and poke holes or used to do that back when I worked on you know 500 Fords the old style originally five O’s with all the different length bolts for the water pump don’t do that anymore because I don’t see those cars anymore but get you magnet race Lassa they’re cheap on Amazon you know get you a bunch now organization of those bolts is more personal preference guys like me I just throw them in a magnet tray other guys will have them separated you know and either way is fine figure out what works best for you if you need to organize it more thoroughly that’s fine whatever helps you get as efficient as possible now for instance I did a bunch of maintenance repairs on a Honda Odyssey today gravy ticket time and bail oil change spark plugs transmission service all that I had three magnet trays in effect I had one on my cart one on the top of the engine and one of my toolbox for all the little plastic clips just easier to not have them in you know the one on my on my cart simply because they take up a lot of room and it’s really easy because they’re not magnetic to flick off and wind up having to go search for them on the floor so I just throw them on my toolbox so figure out how to maximize your efficiency on organization of your fasteners little things like that if you’re not having to figure out bolts will dramatically increase your efficiency in that department all right next one parts you get your pile of parts from the job you’re doing one go through and unpack everything at once sitting next to a trash can cut them open pull the boxes out pull them all out one to verify you’ve got all the parts you need for that repair so you know oh wait a second they shorted me on this I need to go find out where that is or verify that they didn’t send you to left control arms and they should have sent you a left and a right stuff like that and then what you want to do once you’ve got it all unpackaged is stage it normally what I do when I do control arms is after I’ve unpacked them I put the right on the right side the left on the left side so all I got to do is pull the old one out stuff the new one in boom boom boom obviously that only works if you’re carrying the vehicle down when you’ve got parts but get all that stuff out of the way all at once instead of going back and forth to your workbench or your toolbox to cut open to you know parts bags or you know boxes etc get it all out at once little things like that will dramatically increase your efficiency day to day the little things you know just like doing a you know bulb here and there will add up at the end of the week little things like that will add up at the end of the day next one is something that I mean honestly everybody every now and then falls down on including me do everything you can with the vehicle in one position what I mean by that is with the vehicle on the ground do everything possible on top before you lift the vehicle then do everything possible underneath the vehicle before you lower back down basically let’s talk about that hop the honda odyssey again up in the air working on doing undoing the lower timing cover while you’re doing that drain the engine oil drain the transmission pull the filter off do all that stuff while you’re working it can be draining instead of you standing around waiting for it to drain after you’ve done the timing belt multitasking just like I talked about a second ago multitask what I mean by that is let’s say you’re doing that timing belt job but you also had a rotate well pull all the wheels off cause you already have to pull one off anyway to do the timing belt unless you like you know working with a tire in the back of your head while it is you got the car running you’re bleeding the cooling system that’s when you put the tires back on that’s when you check air pressure is when it’s already got to sit there and run so do as much as you can when you’ve got time where you really can’t do a whole lot other than work on the vehicle and you know like you know draining something well when you’re draining something do something else because watch an oil drain doesn’t make you any money alright next one is something I don’t do much anymore mostly because I’m not far away from most of that stuff but stock common parts at your toolbox what I mean by that is you know go through and pick out a couple of each kind of you know taillight ball brake light bulb get you a brake box just pile them up in there so when you have a brakes you know brake light bulb to put in you don’t have to walk across the shop or into the parts room or any of that have it on your toolbox have it in your toolbox somewhere so you can go and get that and not have to stop walk all the way to the parts room get your ball walk all the way back that kind of stuff right there just kills efficiency you know as little as time as that takes it’s just wasted time that you could be working on a car remember the faster you get them out the faster you can pull the next one in you know oil filters when I worked at one shop I had the most common oil filters on a shelf in my bay so I pull the vehicle in drain the oil spun the new filter on I had an old reel right there so just pump pump pump drain plug washers are the same if you’re working on Honda’s Toyota’s Nissan’s get you a little box you know have them in your in your cart so you don’t have to walk away to go get a washer common fluid serviced chemicals you know I worked at a shop that had one thing a brake loop for the entire shop so every time you were doing a brake job you had to walk and go find it because the biggest problem was nobody ever put it back where it belonged it was always sitting on somebody’s workbench if you work at a shop where they will not buy multiples of chemicals like that and this is probably going to piss off a few people and don’t get me wrong it pissed me off go to parts store buy your own have it on your cart it sucks it shouldn’t be that way but have it available so you can continue working you know if you work at a dealership just go to the parts counter and buy it common fluids now if you watched any of my shop tours you know right there is a bunch coolant I also have power steering fluid stuff like that common stuff I keep around here so when I’m working on a car I don’t have to go and get it it seems very trivial but again this is time is money every bit of time you spend working on the car is more money in your pocket so my question for you guys and gals is what are your efficiency tips what tips do you have for these young technicians coming up in the world to help them make more money leave it in the comments everybody likes little tips if you like the video give me a thumbs up you really like the video subscribe make sure to hit that Bell notification so you get notified when I put out a new video if you don’t like my tips give me a thumbs down comments are always appreciated and as always thanks for watching I am the flat rate master
