The Drive to Succeed: Education Meets Demand for Modern Automotive Technicians | WorkingNation

for me it’s a pride thing a lot of people have a stigma that working on cars is easy to do I wish that they knew that effort that most technicians mechanics they put into there’s nobody that’s ever gonna have higher expectations on me than myself my name is Nicholas Schick I’m from Silver Lake Wisconsin and I work at Silver Lake Auto Service ever since I was young boy I was kind of in automobiles my dad got me into working on classic cars and I always kind of thought being an automotive service technician would would be the way I’d like to go in the future my name is Michael win track I’m from Racine Wisconsin and I’m 19 years old sometimes people look at these technical jobs as something that other people’s kids do and I see this cooperation as something that overcomes that snap-on and Gateway Community College partner together because cooperation between technical colleges and businesses are an essential way to match curriculum to the skills that are needed and that’s one of the problems that we’re solving to think about all electric vehicles are autonomous vehicles it’s not the same if you wanted your son or daughter to work in a career where they are on the front edge of technology I could make the case that your son or daughter should be an automotive technician well in 2006 when I took a look at some of the automotive programs that we had at Gateway they were not meeting the expectations of our employers so when I reached out to snap-on it was really to help us better understand how we could make sure that our content and curriculum was going to serve the needs of our students I went into the program I had no experience whatsoever I was someone that didn’t have this background and it grew up around all of this stuff my wife was pregnant so I knew I was having a kid on the way Gateway allowed me to have the opportunity to receive a job [Music] mic started in our high school program I think that’s a key aspect of this whole program that students can start while they’re in high school and then transfer those directly into the college with middle school he was fixing the principal’s car when he went to high school um he took the shop classes right away he kind of scooted to the top of the class just because they have that natural ability so we’re very very proud of him Mike is one of our great success stories he really has you know leveraged all the opportunities available to him and I have full confidence you’ll leave here and be a world-class technician technicians are gaining an age those individuals are now returning our Mopar cap local program a gateway is a key program for us to help identify future technicians to supply that talent that we need the Gateway snap-on programs definitely changed my life quite recently I finished up my apprenticeship and got hired on as a junior technician after Chrysler dealership I’ll also be certified in FCA Mopar cap local program about a little less than a year after graduating I had the opportunity that I became the lead technician at a shop there’s no way in less than a year if I handed gone through gateway out of nal to be the top guy at the shop I just never would have happened Nick has the right schooling he had the right attitude I was looking for I think at his resume it said if I can’t fix it I’ll figure it out no matter what Americans have always been the people of work and pursuit of happiness has always meant having the job where you have pride and dignity and keep your family warm and safe the makers and the fixers create the fabric of the society we enjoy when you walk into one of these classrooms and you see the equipment and you see the environment it screams reinforcement of the dignity and specialness of the work those people do for me it was absolutely worth it you know to come home at the end of the day and see my kids and my wife and know that I put the best effort I possibly could have done that’s kind of what it’s about making sure that you’re giving the best that you can do [Music]
