Streamlining additive manufacturing for spinal implants


IMR are a research and technology organisation,
we are part funded by enterprise Ireland. What we do is we enable industry to access
cutting edge technologies in a de-risked environment. What we’ve designed is known as an ACID.
An Anterior Cervical Inter-body Device and what is does is it replaces discs that are
fused together or suffered from a degenerative disease.
So, the implant are made using additive manufacturing technologies such as ordered and disordered
lattice structures. They exist in the part to allow osseointegration and vascularisation.
What this means is when its placed inside the body its far less likely to reject it
and typically result in far better patient outcomes.
nTopology’s role is to provide engineers with the tool to take full advantage of additive
manufacturing. We work closely with OEMs like Renishaw and researchers like IMR to make
sure we’re meeting the industry’s needs. nTopology’s easy to use and very fast. We’ve
cut the design time of complex structures from days to minutes. We can also optimise these parts
using simulation data. Ultimately this project could result in better
outcomes for patients so we’re excited to work with Renishaw and researchers like IMR
to help them promote adoption of additive technologies in industry.
In order to create a product using a new technology you require software experts, hardware experts
and people who can control the design intent from beginning to end. Using nTopology and Renishaw’s intelligence
and engineering expertise we’re able to piece together all the required parts to create
this product.
