Software Engineering Work at ACV Auctions – Joe Peacock

Hi my name is Joe Peacock and I’m
the vice president
of engineering at ACV Auctions.
My track at ACV has actually
been a little unique. I’ve been here
full time
for about a year
and 11 months.
Before that I actually interned at
ACV when the company was very small.
I had left and went off the west
coast in
the interim but wound up coming
back.
It’s been awesome to watch a
company kind of grow.
I’ve worked at small startups before
with only a couple of people.
And then I’ve also worked at
companies
with 20,000 employees buildings
and the best software in the world,
and kind of seeing us go from a
smaller
company into a high growth startup
into a much larger kind
of established entity in Buffalo has
been
really exciting.
It’s been an experience I haven’t
had before.
Overall were trying to build
something really big
in a city where traditionally the
big things have a built.
I would say we feel like a startup
in all the good ways
in that, if theres problems that
need to
be solved and your passionate about
going
and solving them,
you have the ability to take the
accountability
to go solve them, especially if
theyre important and high impact to
the business.
All of the leaders in each
department have worked really
hard to kind of stabilize
or growth and set clear paths
on where we’re going.
You know, we know what our strengths
are,
which are we have really great
condition reports.
We’ve got a really great engineering
team
and so far we’ve done a pretty good
job
at scaling into additional markets.
I think that focusing on those
strengths
and understanding where we are in
the market place
at all times
and diving deeper into those
strategies
is really crucial to us continuing
to
be successful.
But, I think that also will keep us
kind
of tight to the cord that we’re
trying to stay
on, which is how we build the best
condition
reports so that people can buy
and sell cars as objectively as
possible.
We were very careful about how this
team was built
out. We wanted to find the best
people in software
whether they’d worked on satellites
or working on social networks.
Because we knew that to build some
of the best products
you’re going to need really great
technology.
We also knew that it was a hard
problem up front so we
wanted to make sure we had the right
people there.
