Should You Get Into Auto Repair? -ETCG1

greetings viewers Eric car guy here also known as eat ECG one on this channel hey on this channel we don’t do repair videos we just talk about stuff so if that bores you offend you in some way I suggest you head over to air at the car guy and watch yourself some repair videos link in the description of that channel go check them out enjoy yourself knock yourself out but if you want to stick around for the conversation welcome you today I’m going to respond to a question that I get at least at least twice a week at least twice a week and that is Eric I been working on my own car or I really love working on cars I you know just I absolutely love it and I want to become an automotive technician now I’ve done videos in the past on atcg one about what process you go through in order to become an automotive technician but today I’d like to talk a little bit about should you become an automotive technician really that’s subjective that’s totally up to you whether or not you should I can say for me heck it worked out it worked out great as a matter of fact I mean look at me now i’m eric the car guy and that all stemmed from that that same thought that you might be having saying yourself you know i really want to become an automotive technician i’m gonna pull the trigger i’m going to do it well more power to you seriously i’m not going to tell you know don’t get into the profession but i’m just going to give you a couple of little warnings and some of these warnings have popped up in other videos and other discussions that we’ve had but i want to speak directly to this question as i said that i get quite often so this way if i get that question in the future here here’s this video just for you so if you’ve been referred to this video by me welcome and also welcome to the profession I love enthusiastic people I love people that are enthusiastic about auto repair they get me excited about auto repair they renew my interest in it because this is one of the main things that you run into and this is one of the main things that you need to really be cautious of before you decide to be a technician and that is working on vehicles for living day to day is a world a galaxy a universe away from working in your garage on the weekends with your friends or whatever working on your friends family’s cars that kind of thing you find success there you get a little you get a little charge out of every time you fix something it makes you feel really good knowing that you went in there and you did that great job and it’s awesome well I got to tell you you don’t know squat most of you don’t know squat yeah I mean you think you’re doing it right but get yourself into school and you find out oh geez I’ve been doing it like that for years and maybe that wasn’t such a good idea I had many of those moments when I was in school I mean many things that I’d been doing for years thought I’ve been doing it right got into school realized as a professional either don’t do that or don’t was just completely wrong so that’s part of the problem part of the problem is is that you have a perception of what it is to be an auto mechanic and that perception is probably like I said a galaxy away from what the reality of working as a technician is it’s a lot of fun it’s a real it’s it’s really cool to be able to do this kind of thing to be able to take something that’s broken and fix it and send it down the road and collect a paycheck for it it’s almost it’s almost like stealing money because you’re doing something that you love so much and they’re paying for it I mean when I first started out that’s exactly how I felt I was like I cannot believe they’re paying me to do this I don’t get it because I absolutely loved it I’m somewhat you know masochistic in a way because I like the abuse but I agree to love that abuse and not everybody will grow to love the abuse in fact some of you may get into the profession and begin to resent it and then you say to yourself after you get done working a long day in a shop where it’s hot and you’re sweating all day and you go home and you know you had the intention of working on that project that you’ve had sitting around now that you have the knowledge now that you have the tools and you look at it and you’re like I’m leaving it I just I don’t want to see another car today it’s been a long day last thing I want to do is mess with that I had one of those projects it was my Ford it’s been featured in other videos initially way excited about it had a nice big engine put some little performance modifications to it you know knew what I was doing knew what I was doing so I was successful in what I was doing which is great because a lot of times when you’re a DIY and you’re doing this stuff it’s not over successful it’s a lot of trial and error but when you become a professional you know what you’re doing and at least I hope you know what you’re doing and it’s a very different feeling when you get in there but once again end of a long and working on cars all day last thing you want to do is go focus on that project somebody I’m saying your motivation will dwindle another thing it’s really expensive to become a technician and it’s not so much the school some of you tell me about some of the student loans that you’ve accrued as a result of your schooling to become a technician whoo ooh that’s that’s a lot in and of itself to some of these schools are you’re going to that’s a lot of money and then you’ve got to pay that back each in addition to paying that back you’ve also got tools to buy and tools to buy and tools to buy and tools to buy you’re never ever going to be done buying tools ever just just resign yourself to that now and say to yourself okay I’m going to continue buying tools forever and ever don’t make the mistake as a new technician though that you go onto that tool truck and it’s like being in a candy store and it’s like oh wow look at all this great stuff I want this I want this and with this tool guy says fine walk up the truck with it try it out you know you’re gonna love it just keep it pay me so much a week and then so much a week and then so much a week and then you know he’s he’s your dealer you’re the junkie you’re buying tools and when you buy professional tools and a lot of you come out and you say you know Craftsman tools are good enough blah blah blah you know harbor freight tools are fine you know and they’re great for the DIY but I got to tell you when you’re working on stuff for living and working professionally there’s no comparison between the professional grade tools and the DIY tools so I’m not knocking craftsmen at all I’ve got a ton of Craftsman stuff if you watch my home toolbox video you see this filled with craftsman stuff in a craftsman toolbox okay and that’s what I started out with actually that’s the toolbox that I used for my site work where I put that in my shop and kept my toolbox at work so I didn’t have to transport all my stuff from work you know home to do side work every day that was real pain so I had to buy more tools are you seeing the pattern here got thousands and tools and I have actually a lightweight compared to some mostly because I was too cheap to buy a new box I bought myself a used box for 400 bucks about that thing 17 years ago it’s how long ago I bought that box for 400 bucks now the drawers they’re not roller drawers they’re really stiff and hard to work and all that kind of stuff but I’ve got news to it you know it’s good for the arms but you may find yourself hey I’d love to have a brand new Maximizer yeah me too and you know that color is just right of that that decal package is just right I got to have it well there goes five grand it’s a quality box you’ll have it for the rest of your life I hope unless you run a car into it or somebody you work with does that’s another video here you are yeah you’re saddled with a lot of money and tools and it kind of becomes like like a perpetuating thing so you have to pay to continue to do your profession if you’re lucky you’ll end up in a shop that maybe gives you a tool else super rare super rare that that happens but also the day to day the day to day of being an automotive technician way different way different from deep be and DIY and doing the stuff on your own time and everything else it’s it’s different when you’re working on a customer’s car customer is not going to see you repair the same way you did in fact many customers come at you with the idea that you’re trying to rip them off before you ever open your mouth or anything or you’re at a dealership situation where you you know you’re dealing with a service writer and they’re coming to you and they make demands on you and that may be salesmen are coming over to you and they’re making demands on you and then management’s coming to you and making demands on you and here you are the technician that’s stuck in the middle okay tool investment huge motivation for doing the work after a period of time the likelihood is that you will come to not like it so much when it’s a job it’s a job okay it’s just like the job that you have now that you hate and eventually you may find yourself in the same position working on cars maybe not okay there’s always always a possibility of not but more often than not you’re going to end up with this why did I ever get into this begin with and that’s what I’m trying to maybe steer you away from or prepare you for if you love it you want to do it anyway ignore what I’m saying and just do it and hopefully it’s going to work out better for you than it has for most people it’s quite possible that it will okay and I’m not going to rule that out I’m not going to take that away from with the amount you pay to do this and with the amount you get paid when you’re all said and done in fact I did a video not too long ago about labor rates it was the one about Labor rates our labor rates fair and as I said in that video technicians are only seeing twenty five percent twenty percent fifteen percent of that total labor charge so out of that hundred dollars an hour just for round numbers you might see twenty five percent of that might after a while after you built yourself up if you want to make money in this business I’ll tell you this if you want to make money as an automotive technician really get good at diagnosis really get good at your electrical be good at those two things if you want to get into automotive I’ll tell you that right now because most guys out there are parts hangers most of us are parks hangers you could even call me a parts hanger if you wanted to heck I worked in an Acura dealership and honestly if you want to get spoiled if you want to be ruined work for Honda or Acura it’s too easy okay it’s just too easy and ruin you if you’re looking for a challenge try an independent shop a good independent shop with a good reputation under somebody who knows what they’re doing I mean something like that can make you hone your skills and become a better technician if that’s what you truly want take a pay cut work at the independent shop and learn something learn different mix of different models that kind of thing a dealership you become a specialist it’s like I make this comparison to doctors all the time and some of you hate that but doctors a lot of them are specialists you got a neurologist you’ve got a neurologist you’ve got all these people that specialize in different areas and that’s all they do well the reason for that is because there’s so much to learn in those areas automobiles are similar in that respect and that there’s different makes and they all have like different idiosyncrasies and different tools that you might need special tools that you might have in your box but once you start spreading yourself out over all the makes and models then your tool collection will time to grow I think the guys named the pet shops have huge tool boxes I got by it accurate just fine with that little thing and that should tell you something now let me give you a ray of hope or a suggestion okay if you’re thinking about getting into auto repair a lot of us are of the opinion that the auto repair industry is sort of in a period of reset right now and as a result the pay is not that great the respect isn’t there some something’s got to change so rather than forcing yourself into that I want you to make a consideration and I say this a lot make this consideration consider diesel and the reason why I say that is because diesel right now is kicking butt and if you want to do diesel right see what you can do to get yourself into a fleet shop that is where it’s at I hear it over and over again the guys that are doing that kind of stuff they’re making good money they got good benefits and they got good work it’s different work than working on automobiles so that may not take away from your desire to work on whatever car that you’re building or motorcycle or whatever it is that you’re building in your garage at home that might not take away the motivation because it’s not the same thing it’s something different and fleet you know diesel everything just around the world not just in in the US it just around the world everything that is in your life was on the back of a truck at one point time think about that that being said those trucks and keeping them maintained and keeping them in service is extremely important to the people that own those companies so they spend a lot of money on maintenance and upkeep and repairs of their vehicles so it’s not like you call the customer out and say I I got to charge you $2,000 to replace this part on your car or else you’re not going to have your car or not gonna have your conditioning or whatever it is and they just lose it because they don’t have the money fleet service different story that truck is making them money every minute that it’s down it is costing them money so they want it back they want it done and when it done right and they want it done now it’s a very different mentality going from the the fleet work to automotive work so if you’re going to spend that much money another thing about fleet shops I talk about tools I’ve had a couple of guys come to me and tell me that some of the fleet shops they work in provide them with tools yes I did say that they provided them with a toolbox with tools in it to work on their stuff flipside to this a lot of these places are pretty darn strict and if you’re one of those kind of people that likes to cut up likes to party let loose that kind of thing be where you got to be on the straight and narrow in these places because there’s a lot at stake I mean you’re talking about millions of dollars millions of dollars that are going through these these fleet shops they don’t mess around they can’t afford to mess around it’s fixed it’s fixed right and that’s that you become one of those people you’re an asset you become a cut-up you become somebody who’s not valuable guess what bye-bye and you know heck I’d fire you too if that’s what was on the line I wouldn’t mess around with you I just cut you loose automotive shops dealerships maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they know that they’re screwing technicians over so it seems to me that they seem a bit more relaxed in some dealerships not all dealerships really depends on the service manager run in the place I’ll give you one last piece of advice before I make this video to name long and that is when you’re in that interview for that shop that you’re looking to get into I want you to interview your employer don’t just let it be them asking all the questions and asking you I want you to put them on the spot because this is your future okay you’ve spent a lot of time in education you know you’re about to face a lot of tools that you’re going to have to buy that kind of thing and you’re going to have to build up your experience based on whatever shop that is with all that in mind go into that interview with that mindset that this is going to be what you are going to put down your roots may not happen but but I want you to go in with that mentality and I want you to look out for yourself and say you know take a look at the guys in the shop if you can after you’re done with any interview try to go out the shop try to talk to some of the guys out there off-the-record on sly something like that see how they feel about working there some of them might be jealous of you coming in some of them might see you as a pay cut walking in the door maybe you’re replacing somebody who is a problem try not to be a problem yourself try to grow into the group interview your employer in the same way they’re interviewing you they’re looking at you they’re evaluating body language they’re evaluating your resume they’re evaluating just basically you I want you to do the same thing to them I want you to look at them like okay are you gonna be good enough for me not just am I gonna be good enough for you because there’s going to be no question about that because right you love what you do you worked really hard in school you graduated you got out and that’s the other thing those of you out there that are saying I’m just going to open up my own shop as soon as I got out of school or I’m you know no that’s that’s not likely to happen because if you don’t understand the industry and you just dive into opening up your own shop you’re really going to handicap yourself because first of all you don’t have the experience necessary to know what it takes to do this kind of thing not to mention the connections that you need in order to make it profitable but you’re going to add a business on top of that you need to manage the business as well as learning how to repair vehicles don’t do that work in the industry for a while before you open up your own place so don’t make assumptions alright and really think about it really think about it and consider fleet consider fleet consider diesel that may be a better option if you’re looking to make a decent living if you’re looking to be an auto mechanic you may be struggling for a while you may be struggling for a while and it may seem like you wasted your time in school and money in order to do this it’s I’ve heard it I’ve heard you come to me this is you coming to me this is not just me saying this I’m taking the information that you’ve given me and I’m putting it back out there for those of you asking
