Should You Become an Automotive Technician?

Should You Become an Automotive Technician?

today we’re talking should you get into being an automotive technician I think this is kind of a loaded question because there’s there’s a lot of good and a lot of bad and especially as a younger technician starting out which is myself I’ve learned a lot of things and there’s a lot of things that I definitely didn’t know would be the way they are when you’re talking school what it’s gonna be like when you get into the industry that first thing being everyone kind of seemed to fill your head with when you get out you’re gonna be making 18 bucks an hour right away and you deserve it and that’s what you should get I think that’s kind of BS because one it didn’t happen I can tell you that and two I don’t really know that it should happen here’s why so you get out of school and you’ve learned a lot of things by the book but that’s not how really anything actually goes in the shop alright so there’s a lot of stuff you learn if I had to take the amount of stuff that I learned in tech school and compare it to what I’ve learned in the last two years of me being a technician it’s like just like that that much you learn so much stuff that you don’t learn in school just by real-world experience and so I don’t necessarily think that coming right out of tech school justifies 18 bucks an hour and that before everyone goes crazy wololo of it that’s crazy you know I deserve it and well prove yourself prove that you deserve it all right I can tell you right now that there’s a lot a lot a lot that you haven’t even seen or heard of that I mean I’ve been doing at two years I haven’t even seen and heard of as two years as nothing right but in the time that I’ve been on my own just the amount of knowledge that I’ve gained from just having to figure things out for myself by doing things for the first time then quite frankly by screwing up because guess what if you think you’re gonna come on a tech school and you’ve learned a lot of stuff and you’re just gonna be great and it’s gonna be commissions gonna be awesome I mean no you’re gonna lose your ass a few times and you’re gonna be taking stuff back apart and you’re gonna break stuff I mean that’s just how it goes so I think that’s the first thing you should consider when considering being an automotive technician is it’s not going to be I’m gonna get out I’m gonna be pulling motors and making all this money because for a while you’re gonna be doing some grunt work and you’re gonna mess up and that kind of brings me to my second point of you get out of school let’s say you work at a dealership I’m constantly getting I want to say harassed but asked to do more Toyota training on-the-job training continuing your education and whether that be online classes whether that be a rep coming to the store and giving you you know we just had a rep come for geo for recalls for Toyota’s not that long ago sliding door recall and they came in and trained us at the store kind of how it was going on and then sometimes they ship us out to actual classes you know ours is in Kansas City and in Watertown South Dakota so you get shipped out for these classes plus your ASE is now I know there are student asu’s because I did them all but they’re they don’t count for anything in the real world so you have to get your EFC so if you come out of tech school and you don’t have any certifications you really don’t have any real world experience and you don’t have any if you’re at a dealership any dealership certifications there’s a lot you can’t do and I’m not even completely dealership certified yet for Toyota and there’s a lot of stuff I can’t do yet and so are you really as valuable as you think you are coming straight on a tech school that’s the first thing I think you should think of is how much you’re gonna be making right off the bat and if it’s worth it to you to kind of step yourself up the ladder and be patient and learn the second thing I think you got to know before you go into being an automotive technician is Commission is a game alright it’s the game you play and it’s at most shops um shops or hourly I’d be willing to say that Commission’s better and yes I’ve lost my but on Commission a few times more than a few times and it’s frustrating but after you kind of get used to it it’s not so nerve-racking anymore and for me I really like it because I know like the harder I work the earlier I get there to later I stay the more thoroughly I do my inspections I can make more money right it’s as hard as you work you can make more money now that being said before people jump to the comments and go no no no what if there’s no work that is another factor and in this part of the country where I am where we have hard harsh winters Minnesota North Dakota winters it gets slow and right now is spring and it’s still like snowing and blizzard in in some spots it’s really slowed us down and so you can make what you can make but as long as there’s work there which kind of brings me to my next point which is make sure you are getting out of your tickets the most that you can and what I mean by that is don’t rip people off all right that’s why I hate that and I see it I’m not I work with a lot of good guys but I’ve seen people that they’re just out to make as much money as they can and they rip people off whether that’s over selling brake pads that are at six millimeters or even better than that or it’s oh you need this flush or this service and it was already done or maybe someone just had a rack and pinion replaced and then the next time they’re in they get recommended a power steering flush and it’s like don’t do that that’s not what I mean do your inspection well you know spin the wheels as a caliper starting to stick are you going to be able to fix that and prevent them from eating rotors in the future is the battery super corroded if that battery is super corroded at my shop that pays a half an hour to clean that off and do the battery terminal kit and service kit and you get a dollar spiff out of it but don’t just don’t do it and then do it you know don’t do a crappy job don’t do a half-ass job if you’re gonna do it do the work well if you’re going to upsell something don’t just do it to pad your paycheck and then I think one of the lot of the other things that people overlook is like light bulbs cabin filters wiper blades I mean all that stuff check it if the cabin filter is dirty recommend it I know it’s only two ticks at most places 2/10 of an hour but if you do three of them in that day what do they take you two minutes to do on a lot of cars if it takes you two minutes you get two ticks you do three of them you’re over half an hour then wiper blades at my store are a tick apiece so there’s 0.3 if you get all three do that couple times you have an hour so all those little things add up so I think you’ve really got to make every single ticket count and lastly the last place to look is the quick loop now a lot of people I think get into a position where they think they’re above working in the quick lube jobs they don’t want to do it and I mean let’s be honest who doesn’t like changing oil who hates it because most of the time you get an oil change there are three tenths of an hour and you have to do an inspection on it as well and a lot of the people that come in just for an oil change that’s all they want so if they come in and you start up selling stuff it’s gonna do nothing a lot of the times all there then get them irritated so by that point you’re raising the car you’re doing the oil change you do an inspection you get three ticks but I look for the good tickets in there if I get an oil rotate and that’s gonna pay me 7/10 I can crank one of those out and make time on it all right and if it’s slow and I got nothing else to do if I’m not doing training or trying to read up on a form and learn some new information I’m not just gonna sit there for free I mean and sometimes that’s hard to get yourself to do especially if it gets low I know I get into a rut where I just if it’s low I just don’t wanna do anything anymore but if I can make myself do it if you do three oil rotates you’ve made a little over I mean over an hour you know or like toyotacare we have rotate only is for like ten thousand mile services earned sorry fifteen thousand mile services I rotate only pays you a half an hour and all you got to do is rotate and inspect it so get all that little stuff make every ticket count I think the last point we’re gonna mention in this video anyway about should you be an automotive technician and things to consider is older technicians in the shop from my experience it works one of two ways they’re either very friendly and eager to help you if you help yourself do not go up to that older technician and say hey what do I do if you haven’t even tried yourself go look on the computer try your best have a game plan ready to tell them hey I tried this and this and this but what do you think I should do next they will appreciate that trust me but a lot of times there are bad technicians to learn from in your shop they feel entitled if you get gravy or you get a timing belt or you get flushes therefore they’re pissed off right and you got to learn just to ignore those kind of people and you know I’ve I’ve been belittled and demeaned at work for really no reason I work hard you guys and i i i don’t see any reason for anyone if you have a good work ethic and you’re willing to learn to treat you poorly but some of those older technicians can get like that and i don’t know if its they’re not happy anymore but you got to worry about you do not worry about what they’re doing and you’ll sniff them out pretty quick don’t go to them for advice find another technician that you can talk to and bounce ideas off of if you really get stumped it’s good to have that one resource but guess what also be ready to help them so maybe you don’t have the knowledge base but they’re really busy one day and they got to rotate some tires well they helped you diagnose something yesterday you were stumped on so maybe you could rotate those tires for them maybe they need to bleed brakes maybe you could help them bleed the brakes you know do all those little things that help pay them back they scratched your back maybe you don’t have the knowledge to help them diagnose something but you could help them out in other ways all right so i hope this video helped you i hope it makes you make an informed decision on how to get into the industry thanks for tuning into the discussion leave a comment below make sure you like and subscribe tell me what you think if you have an experience if you are new in the industry tell me what your take is on if people should or should not get into the industry or what they should do is starting out as not a motor technician see you next time
