Shocks and Struts | How to Tell if They are Bad | Noise | Auto Repair | Symptoms | Strut|Strut Mount

hi guys West Harrison with above-and-beyond Auto Repair and I’m on my way to Colorado go do a little indoor skydiving I thought I’d take a quick minute answer some questions what are shocks and struts shocks and struts they are the dampening device that is on your vehicle to keep the tires from bouncing up and down and making your car bounce you up down you’ve ever been driving down the street you see a carnage real bouncy to reroute beds that’s the shocks and struts are just completely worn out a real simple test to be able to determine whether your shocks or struts are worn out is to go to your back bumper and push down it should go down from you pushing and then let up real fast trip it should just go and stay solid if it bounces the rear rear shocks or struts depending on which one it has are worn out and they need to be replaced go to your front bumper push down on when you let up real fast it should go about one and a half times and then come to a stop it should go down and then let up and should go like this done that’s normal if it goes more than that they’re born out they also need to be replaced another way to be able to determine if your shocks and struts are worn out is by feeling the tires now until you are at it you know you do a lot of tires you won’t I can’t describe how to tell you I feeling the tires but what you’re looking for is you’re looking for a cup along the edge of the tire it’ll it’ll have a cup it’ll when you run your hand on you you’ll just feel it it’ll be cut chubby is worn out shocks and struts and tires that are out of balance can also cause the same thing and a severe tire out of balance over a long period of time getting ruined a shock or strut because the struts trying to keep it from bouncing and the tires want to balance and so it wears out the little valve inside the shop or the strut assembly depending on which one it is trucks generally tend to have shocks up front most cars have struts some cars do have shocks up front in the rear it could be a shock it could be a strut it could be a combination of a strut shock assembly depending on what it is now the strut there are strut assemblies now the strut assembly consists of the strut the coil spring and the upper bearing plate on if there’s no clanking or clunking in the front end when you turn you can get away with just doing just the strut if there’s any clanking clucking squeaking or anything like that you also want to do the bearing plate up front because the bearing plate is what pushes the tension from the coil spring transfers the tension from the coil spring to the top of the car but also allows the strut to be able to turn and they do wear out and they’re also expensive but rather than doing a strut and then six months later having a bearing plate go out where it’s going khlo clunk every time you go over a bump or you turn the wheel just change it at the same time it’s it’s a little more expensive but then it’s just it’s all done instead of just trying to put pieces together if somebody says if you go somewhere in there they say well you got to have shocks and struts and your tires aren’t cupped and the rear bumper doesn’t bounce more than once or twice and the front bumper doesn’t go I’m sorry the rear bumper doesn’t bounce at all it just goes down and then back up and the front goes down and then comes back up and stops within one-and-a-half bouncies they’re fine they’re there trying to sell you something you don’t need if you have any questions about what I’m talking about feel free to give us a call eight one six four five three eight two eight two and I’ll try and help guide you in the right direction if somebody tells you that you need them in you’re close to the shop by all means swing on in I’ll show you the bounce test I’ll check your tires for you to see if they’re cupped if they’re not you don’t need a belt spent twelve fifteen hundred dollars on a set of shocks and struts all the way around that you don’t need the big tire sellers are real bad about selling new shocks and struts and alignments that you don’t need just to have why I I hope this tip helps if you have any questions give us call eight one six four five three eight two eight two and my name is Wes Harrison and thank you very much we have a good
