Sheffield Formula Racing | Engineering at Sheffield

We’re an entirely student-run project. There’s about forty of us at the
University. In the year, we’ll design, manufacture and then race
a single seat race car – like a little Formula One car – at Silverstone.
Over the past three years, the team has been iterating on a quite known design
and then making sure, getting all the teething problems out, making sure it’s
reliable and making sure it can complete the event.
The main thing about this year’s car, it’s the first year we’ve ever had
aerodynamics. So that means we’ve got a rear wing, side wing and a front
wing. Sheffield Formula Racing has never had aerodynamics and we’re really
proud that we’ve managed to get them designed and built.
We’ve got about a week now where we’re going to then take the car, test and
take it to a dyno, make sure it’s running sweet.
And then next Wednesday we’ll go down to Silverstone and start the process of
running through the event where we’ll have some static events where we’ll talk
about the car, talk about how we’ve manufactured it, how we’ve costed it and
then we’ll move on to the dynamic events which consists of an acceleration, a
skid pad, a sprint and then an endurance and that’ll take us to the Sunday.
We’ll find out the results and we’ll see it we’re together as a team.
Every single year, we’ve been improving and hopefully we’ll keep on improving.
It’s a really, really great experience.
It’s one of the best things that I’ve joined since I started University.
We spend a lot of time throughout the year in design meetings working
with each other, learning new skills on software like SolidWorks
and AutoCAD.
Then in the Easter holidays and after exams, we spend every
day building the car which is a really great opportunity
to learn so many new manufacturing and design skills and
really get to know the team better.
I always say that without it, I don’t know what I’d do because I’d be so lost
for time but being part of the team, it’s like being part of a family almost.
You might have seen us at the open days but if not then talk to your
department, visit the freshers’ fairs and all that sort of thing – we’ll be
there. Put your name down as soon as possible and apply for the team
and it’ll be an amazing learning experience for you alongside your degree.
