Reflections: Jeff Herman, MHS Automotive Technology Teacher

my name is Jeff Herman I teach the automotive program here at the Maryland heritage school and I’ve been here for six years I love what I do my first vehicle was a 1971 Chevy Blazer of course I couldn’t leave it alone I had to do everything I could to it engine wise and took out the automatic and put a manual in which I said I’d never do again and I I have several times since then I guess I was blessed with being able to take something apart and look at it I and figure it out I would do that with lawn mower engines before I was ten and get them get them running in and things and and it just kind of went from there one of the mottos that we have in our auto shop is we like to be able to fix whatever comes in the door whether it’s an automobile or a refrigerator a pencil sharpener a toaster a popcorn machine whatever it is if somebody brings it to us we like to be able to to fix it and the students get a lot of satisfaction it builds up self-esteem more than one time I’ve been asked to take a picture of the student so he could send it to his family so they can see what he’s doing had to score in the shop so a lot of them are very very happy and they want to do something like that when I look at those pictures I think awesome it would have been to be a teacher back in those days when things weren’t quite as complicated and a little more nuts and bolts a little more easier for students to comprehend but to continue that legacy of the automotive program and be a part of that I just think it’s awesome right now this day in this shop is the beginning not only of their career if they choose it but also of their reputation as we all know mechanics and technicians have reputations and two to establish a good one from day one so easy to ruin a reputation by making a mistake or doing something wrong or just having poor standards but to maintain you know good standards and and get a good reputation for being able to fix things is always hard to achieve but it’s it’s a good it’s a good thing to have very very valuable when you’re here working with these students they not only absorb the automotive information that I have to offer but they’re just thirsty for all sorts of things life skills they certainly are impressionable you know I find it I just find it so important to to be respectful to everyone and students included if they see that example they tend to want to also return that respect it’s refreshing to be able to supply a need for for what’s needed by the students
