Reel-to-Reel Recorders : Lube Motors of Reel-to-Reel Tape Recorder

at KGB Studios. Continuing on with the sessions on the 4-track reel-to-reel restoration process.
All right so, this is the type of oil you need. I typically use sewing machine oil because
it seems to be very, very well qualified for this type of function. What we’re going to
do is, we’re actually going to drip just one drop right into this hole right there and
then we’ll show you a little about what goes into this next reel. It’s a little more difficult.
Those are the two reels that you have to pay attention with this oil. O.K., so here we
are with the oil and you just drab, one small drop. So, I’ll just squeeze one drop in there
and of course you want to make sure that the deck is laying down and you want to brace
it so that you don’t have any drippage running all over the place. Now let?s go to the next
motor. The next motor is a lot more difficult because you have to align that small little
hole, right there, you probably can’t see it. But you have to align that with the actual
drop. Then grab your oil and you insert one drop of oil in there as well. Now what I tend
to do, is I let it sit for just a short period of time and then I actually turn the reels
a little bit from the front. And I’ll show you that right now. So, this is the reel that
we actually just finished and we want to make sure that, that turns around a little bit.
Just to spread the oil out. Now you only want to turn it one way because if I turn it back
this way, I’m actually working against the breaks. And that’s a section I really can’t
show you because you have to remove the front and the back and then you have to tear into
it quite extensively. The breaks have lasted me over 30 years so it’s not something that
is all that important. This screw on the front, just by the way, is an adjustment for height.
So, if it doesn’t roll properly you can adjust the height with this one. So that’s the one.
The other reel that we’ll turn is down here. But of course that’s turned from the back.
That’s the capstan motor. This is the take up roller here and that you have to take this
other piece off, like we talked about before, to actually lubricate that. And I’ve never
actually done that. So those are the three other pieces, in terms of the three motors
that you actually lubricate her. O.K. So join us next session, to where we’ve now finished
up the back part of the deck and we’ll have to proceed to the front to show you about

  1. No! Don't use sewing machine oil. Some have special additives designed for sewing machines and it can gum up. Also do not use 3 in 1 in the red can. Use Zoom Spout. Some later Teacs use sealed motors. My Teac A6300 has sealed bearings for the reel table motors, and the capstan motor has to be oiled.

  4. This is not the proper way of lubrication. You have to disassemble the motors and lubricate both bearings/ bushings. The front bearing takes more load and fails first. Any way the oil you are using is suitable for that purpose.
    Common people can't do that. So help from a knowledgeable person or technician is necessary.

  5. Sewing machine oil is for sewing machines. You are not an expert, you need a shave and you probably vote for liberal deathocrats.

  6. Questo motore va smontato, sgrassato e lucidate le boccole (bronzine), non ha cuscinetti. Una volta eseguita la pulizia vanno sostituiti i paraolio in gommapiuma che saranno marci (sbriciolati), non si trovano in commercio, bisogna ingegnarsi con una striscia di gommapiuma sottile da unire nella sede del cuscinetto, si, perchè i motori delle bobine dei Tandberg, che sono identici, montano al posto delle bronzine ii cuscinetti. Fatto ciò, si impregna la gommapiuma di olio sintetico senza eccedere e si richiude il motore. Se si lubrifica dal foro senza sostituire la gommapiuma vecchia che non assorbe più l'olio, lo stesso va tutto nel motore 🙂
