if you’ve got a wide range of mechanical skills and have a love for RVs think about becoming a recreation vehicle service technician you’ll be repairing and maintaining every aspect of the recreation vehicle let’s hear from a recreation vehicle service technician to find out more hi I’m Nick I’m a recreational vehicle service technician I work on trailers and motorhomes maintaining and fixing them all typical day I get to work at around 7:30 I make sure my bays cleaned out my tools are in order and I’ll talk to our service writer and see what I have on my schedule for today get my first work order see if I need any parts I’ll go to my parts attendant typical stuff that I’ll do in a date is anywhere from a fridge issue to a water heater I can do a gas test or it could just be something as simple as a winter ice for RV service technicians there are dealerships and there’s also little shops like mom-and-pop shops another opportunity for service technicians is to set up their own truck and go around to different campsites and fix people’s units because a lot of people don’t like to bring it in when they’re enjoying their camp in our industry it’s very team-oriented you do work with a lot of other people because there may be something a problem that you just can’t figure out on your own so you go and ask somebody else as long as you work well with others you’re gonna fit in in the industry we at our shop we are very safety oriented the PPE that we use is steel toe boots face masks when needed welding shield eye protection ear protection you know it to be a technician in this day and age you have to have a lot of tools savvy bit of experience we branch into so many aspects of different trades that it requires our technicians to have again a lot of experience plumbing electrical mechanical chassis everything top to bottom is under our responsibility so it doesn’t all fit in a tool belt per se you need a lot of tools and you have to be able to know how to use them the training I took was a three year course to pretty much get me prepared for the industry a lot of it is hand in hand with working in the shop and then also doing your studies this program is an apprenticeship program it’s three years where you go to school three times for two months you start off as an apprentice and you usually always have a great journeyman showing you the skillset that you need but when you get to the point that you’re a journeyman yourself you get to pass on the knowledge that you’ve obtained to the practices in our job you’re always learning because every year there’s something new to our trade some new slide that just came out some new satellite dish so you’re always constantly learning they’re always researching in our trade there’s many advancement opportunities like for me for example I got stepped up to doing all the demos showing people how to operate their units and then you progress up to like Foreman up to service manager up to you could be go to sales and then gee so there’s always room for improvement you get a little bit of everything in our trade where the whether it be from plumbing to electrical to pipe fitting to gas fitting to carpentry to mechanical to appliance repair you’re never doing the same thing twice there’s always some new and challenging opportunity each day you never get forward I find most satisfying about my work the challenge that I’ve obtained every day the ability to be able to better myself because there’s not too many handyman out there anymore so I’m happy that I’m one of them was able to fix almost anything I really enjoy my trade because I enjoy helping others enjoy their leisure time I’ve seen myself being in this trade for many years to become a journeyman recreation vehicle service technician you must find an employer who is willing to train an apprentice you will apprentice for three 12-month periods including on-the-job training and technical training in each period discover more about this occupation such as educational requirements and salary ranges in the occupational profile on the Alice website and learn more about related occupations like refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic and appliance service technician make the most of your future go to Alastair Alberta dot CA
