No Brake Lights? How to Fix Broken Wire In Harness | 2002 Ford E250

hello once again YouTube fans Tim Cooper Cooper’s automotive repair and we have a 2002 Ford e-250 van in here today God does the construction work anyway his complaint was hey I don’t have any brake lights and not check the fuses on this thing and all the fuses are good I put new bulbs in it and still don’t have any brake light so we’re going to go through the process and see what we find a tool that I use when I’m doing these your pairs you can use a regular circuit tester this is what we call a power Pro reads bolted and ground the battery here and you can apply power to circuits or ground to circuits and be careful with these if you’re working on computers don’t want to be applying power to things that you’re not supposed to do burn stuff up but we’re going to use this since he’s already checked the fuses on it I’m going to go straight to the brake light switch which is usually common issue with them and see if I got voltage of that and kind of explain to you how that works so follow me over here and people ask me how in the world do you handle these dingers that go off all the time you know they don’t drive me nuts I I guess I can block them out fit right underneath here above this brake pedal he’s going to get you a picture of this brake light switch I’m going to put a light on it hopefully you can see this it’s in a bad angle but there’s a little green wire they’re going to it I can’t see the color of the other wire but on one side of that switch this will be 12 volts and when you depress the brake pedal should be 12 volts on the other side so we’re going to see if we’ve got that first that kind of fuses and everything take test liner your PowerPro and you’ll probably hear the power from beep okay hear that DP we got twelve point four twelve and a half volts basically on one side the brake pedals not depressed at this minute and we got nothing on the one side now I hit the brake pedal and we got 12 volts and I put a mirror back in the back of the van to tell me so I don’t have to walk back there depress it and I got nothing we got no brake lights coming to the rear so we got to do a little more searching back there probably going to have to sometimes what I’ll do is I’ve seen it happen so many times on the advance I’ll turn the key on now play with the four-way switch and you see we got four ways flashers flashing back there that thing is dick brake lights not the world right again kind of wriggling around see if I can get anything there I got nothing so we got to get back to the back of the van now and at the long band I hope the power probe is going to reach take this take one side out here the little short bits here let me grab a tool here at the back of the van here shuttle at the walk back afford to have somebody help me i bypassed that brake light switch by running a quick wire across the connector so I’m going to do that and come back here and just Greg likes rich we got going on here I know they put bulbs in it but basically the price bulbs in it you can put the wrong Oh loser you know we have this inside brake light wands right there check this check it out I’m going to take this enough so that’s the reverse lights there off your side all right I’ve got the switch bypassed up there let’s see what’s going on right here we’ve got my bro I don’t usually definite to break light socket plug that the tribal of this power wire right there but we got drowned so we know it’s not the socket I’m going to find out where we’re losing power conditions leave it or not that circuit runs through the turn signal switch so I’ve got to take some stuff apart and then take you on the next step for that so take a pause on it and we’re going to pick up from that point okay we’re back I have another busy day at Cooper’s automotive and back on this 2002 8250 Ford van with in alpha brake lights we did customer said they check the fuses that all those things are probably going to go back over the basics of this thing but before we do any of that we want to go take a look at a wiring action find out where everything’s at and how it operates hopefully get you a pitcher off the computer of wiring diagram complaint location okay I pulled the wiring diagram up this is a picture of it they so pointed this with them I don’t see if I guess I’m going out I’m just a little pin here so we’ve got confused number 7 to 10 amp fuse going to the turn this is a turn signal switch a fuse number 11 15 amp fuse comes across goes to our brake light pedal switch we know we got power here we’ve got this bypassed and all the leads coming out of it so we know we got power here double check this fuse we got to stop light relay this is something in common with this thing so we want to see it’s in the under hood box we want to go we want to go to this relay right here I think would be the best thing I’m writing on my computer I’m going to this relay we want to see that we got 12 volts here coming through the brake light switch on the light green wire here go to ground we need to see 12 volts on pin circuit number 5 right there so under the junction box let’s go back the BHO of the other power distribution boxes right is right here covered snaps off here I’d say I use a power probe guys you just license you can do that um the relay I am not sure which one it is let’s see I’ve got the key I got the switch bypass let me see if this one’s clicking making any sound I hear it clicking okay that doesn’t mean anything but the relay does activate got these relays boosters adapter put that in there for relay on top this makes it so can access all the wires to the relay she would pin number 3 with pin number 1 we got 12 volts right there she can see that on the power probe at twelve point two bolts that we got power there ten number five needed to be hot it isn’t hmm that’s weird because the break has power to it it’s on the same fuse I’m gonna power up pin number five when I do this I’m going to take a shot at the brake lights just to see if they light up back there with everything bypass five right is right there okay power up power up ender five it’s not hot if you get some brake lights ah look at that that okay some reason we don’t have power coming from the boos underneath your feet – so let’s go underneath the dash and double-check this grab flashlights tapered onions here juice box underneath here a couple clips hold it in pull it out there so I can see it then get my power probe again test that fuse circuit was fuse number 11 right there and we’re hot there we’re hot there but we’re getting to the brake light switch let’s spin this thing around the back of it that okay it’s that green and red wires there let’s make sure we got it coming out the back just go Pierson we got it there I got I got it there guys we got a broke wire somewhere between harness here out to that out to this box let’s go out to that box check behind it hush dear hush all right so we know I know we don’t have any power come in there see what takes us to the box and we’ll lift it up okay there’s a clip right there to clip right there so we got to unclip those and and get those out of there I’m just going to use a host plant thing see if I can get this thing to lift there’s one clip come on baby there we go here we go okay actually separated up separate it up on the top that’s cool all right well we have to get this reservoir out of the way that’s power steering doesn’t work back so we can both Lynette this box up get behind this thing see our wires behind there yeah I hope you can see this there’s the relay okay there’s the red wire with a green tracer on it gray stripe all right I doubt we’re going to have anything here all right you know what hang on just a second get a trusty little wire piercer here mister thing in there connect it let’s see if we got any what to cheer not a not a thing they’re reading read aloud if it’s running through the relay all right well we’ve got to take this wiring harness apart start doing some searching I’m kind of run a new wire from that fuse box out there here to fix this problem back on the van again I decided to do some exploratory surgery and following the veins if you will wires and I pulled this well first thing that I did if you look down here I filled this wiring harness back and I found my green light green with my red trace wire right here and test I had 12 volts right here I knew that my break was between here and this fuse box right here I stripped this color with a couple two millimeter bolts out cut all the electrical tape off of it and night I grabbed a hold of that wire and said would you look at that and went and traced and found the other end right there so and well I’ll strip it right now and blow well obviously you conclude that we’ve got this think this sometimes you know should I have called the customer probably the outfit I’m hard-headed enough sometimes well all the time I want to fix it fix it right and always a matter of making money so if you look back down the taillights now I got to break my switch bypass right there I’m connecting disconnected that wire connected that wire there you are so I’m gonna Psalter that wire back together how wire breaks up in a harness like this man I don’t know fatigue over time or something pulls it I don’t get it it’s a little heat you thought of that together we shrink it up I’ll take a good look at the rest of the wires let’s go take all that stuff up put all our pieces back together and that’s a wrap 2002 Ford e-250 van that you would think would be a simple brake light in up repair both users usually a stop light switch dig it in all of that I probably got two hours in this thing but she’s dead
