Lawrence Tech’s SAE Supermileage Team

Hi i’m Brian Sharp team captain of the
2018 Lawrence Tech Supermileage Team. We
are a team of undergraduate and graduate
engineering students who are focused on
designing and optimizing a one-person
vehicle to achieve our goal of reaching
500 miles per gallon. This is a great
example of how Lawrence Tech integrates
theory and practice. So, in order to reach
our goal of 500 miles per gallon we made
a lot of design changes. To start with a
body- it’ll be made out of carbon fiber,
hopefully, if we get the money and that will
decrease the weight by quite a bit and a
lot of the drag will be decreased as
well. We’re making a lot of changes with
steering and braking as well. We want to
switch the hydraulic brakes and our steering wheel will have the
acceleration and the braking integrated
into it instead of separately with
peddles and which would give us more
room as well. As we want to change our
wheels so they’re ultra light and a
decision bearings so there’s less
rolling resistance and with these
changes we think it’ll help quite a bit and then we also have a lot of
powertrain and chassis changes as well.
For our powertrain we’re looking to
replace our starting motor, our fuel
lines, our intake, and exhaust manifold.
For our chassis we’re looking to invest
in a higher strength steel, so that we
can build a simpler chassis that’s
lightweight and meets the safety
requirements for the competition.
I’m really proud to be a part of the 2018 supermileage team. Had a lot of great
times designing and implementing the
systems that will hopefully drive us to
reach our 500 miles per gallon goal within
the coming year. As well as develop my
engineering skills both professionally
and socially with my comrades on the team
Like Brian said being on the
supermileage team is a lot of fun.
Basically a lot of people in this lab so
you learn half the stuff in the
classroom and the other half that you
learned that LTU is in this lab right
here. It’s a lot of work but it’s a good
challenge I’d say just even in the past
six months with all the research and all the designing I’ve been doing on this
vehicle. I’ve learned almost just as much
as I have the rest of my time at Lawrence Tech. So, if you’re interested in
volunteering come join the team. It’s fun,
we’re a small team but a supermileage is
the wave of the future the automotive
industry is all about having
fuel-efficient cars
so it looks good on a resume and it’ll
benefit you in the workforce
so in total all of the changes we’re gonna make to
our car I’ve come to an estimated ten
thousand dollars which needs to be
completely fund raised by us. Links to
our Twitter, Facebook, and crowdfunding page will be in the description below
this car would not be possible without
all of your help and we thank you very much
