IFE Enabling Platform overview – Manufacturing with advanced materials

Associate Professor Leonie Barner: The researchers
in my platform, they are tackling real life problems, real world problems, for example
in the areas of energy, environment, but also we help industry to produce in a more clever
way, so that they depend on less resources. So, for example, I’m involved in one industry
project where we, together with our industry partner, are developing a new material, a
better material to characterise polymers better. And this has got a large impact on research,
but also on the polymer chemistry industry. And we are also developing new materials that
can be used to separate oil from water. So, for example, at the moment when there’s
an oil spill at the ocean the chemicals that are used to clean up are very toxic. And with this new material we hope that we
can access a method that is not toxic to the environment, but as effective as the traditional
method. Environmental problems that we have, we really
need to be more conscious of how we use our resources and if you manufacture in a clever
way you can actually reduce the resources a lot or even recycle. And I think that’s really, really important.
