iATN: A Professional Tool For Professional Techs


hey everybody Pete Meyer outraged technical editor here with you today and we’re gonna take a look at the International automotive technicians Network more commonly known as ia TN website now few weeks back we had Scott round from ia TN come on our after-hours program and share with us all the features and benefits that ia TN has to offer text and shop owners and consumers and the quality of the screen captures though was not as good as I would like it to be so allow me to do what I can to share with you a little bit more on exactly why I think this is such a great resource for professional technicians and that’s what we’re going to start right here on the auto repair professionals tab of the ia TN home page this is the public page that anyone and everyone will see when they log on to a TN there’s the light and before I get involved in all the individual items here let’s get to the very first question I’m sure a lot of you are thinking what does it cost you come right down here first to pricing now the basic membership is free as long as you meet a few certain qualifications you have to be a professional technician this is not a do-it-yourself site and for your basic membership you get to participate in the forums and chat features you also are able to access the technical information from the OEMs and the other partners that are in the resources section but if you open up your pocketbook and join as a individual sponsor for a business sponsor look at all the other features that you get the individual sponsorship includes enhanced versions of the file library and mighty end which we will talk about here at Moen you get to post to classified ads you get to search the ia TN knowledge base look at that 3.4 million records total and you can choose that as an individual or if you’re a shop owner get it free your your text in the back now the additional benefits for a shop is inclusion on their public access you get a personal webpage that you can customize and you’re also listed in the item shop finder now I personally have referred a lot of folks to this shop finder service because it seems to me that those who are actively involved with the ITN take a little bit extra care of their professional image if you will they’re more involved in the industry than those who are not who are where my T and I would say in and I have you know I said family members and customers here and you can do the same we’re going to take a closer look at that too but look at the cost and it’s like 15 bucks a month for an individual and 30 bucks a month for a business I mean that’s nothing the knowledge base and the records achieved and I’m going to show you how all that stuff works but I won’t tell you right now I’ve been a member of i-10 for a long time now this has made me a lot more money than it has ever cost me so now we got that right out of the way let’s let’s back up to the homepage and we’re going to scroll back up to the top and we’re gonna start here with some of the features available to remember we’re on the auto repair professionals tab these are these are available to members now the first is the tech help if you have done everything you could possibly think of and you still are having trouble fixing this car you can use the tech help feature to ask the 75,000 worldwide members of i-80 n for their help and we’ll show you how that works in more detail a little bit later on the knowledgebase again you heard me say this already but the knowledgebase to me is more the single biggest reasons to be a sponsoring member you get access to the complete fixed database form archives and the wave form libraries now let’s take a look at those individually the fixed database goes back to the tech helps I just told you about every tech help that has ever been registered to I Etienne is in this database and that’s one of the very first things I do if I’m dealing with a diagnostic situation I’ve never dealt with before in the very first place or more the very first places that go to is the fixed database I mean the odds are pretty good that someone out there has seen the same kind of problem so I’m gonna go look in there and see what kind of matches I have and that’s going to help me speed up the process it’s all part of gathering information this is one great source of information in addition the fixed database does often times these issues are covered in the forum’s in the technical discussion technical tips HVAC forums I mean you see though with all the listings there in a moment but there’s another great resource and then finally if you’re a scope user and you want to know what a good pattern looks like odds are pretty good that the waveform library here is going to have one for you to compare with and if not you go and post it in the next section of the forums and you ask for help there now what you log the illustrations that you gave are going to be kept in record for the next guy to take advantage of and use it learn from that’s another great thing about ia TN it’s a group of professional technicians worldwide that have are willing to not only help one another learn from one another now the Forbes cover variety of topics and we’ll talk about that here in a moment in a more detail and then another great area the resources industry resources there is some great stuff there from Toyota GM Ford government resources lots more the state take a quick look at that here’s some examples I mean there’s like stuff in there Toyota training materials Ford said GM and we’ll take a little more look at that a bit later my ITN is for sponsoring members that’s kind of neat let’s just say this you dealing with an issue on a Ford f-150 in your your researching your your information resources you’re finding posts and in the forums and the fixed databases all of them are or areas that are of help and it could be of help to you in the future so you decide you want to keep a hold of those you don’t go digging digging them up again so you can you can favorite those and you can add a tag or a descriptive word a keyword that allows you to easily pull those back out again I mean just an excellent excellent feature of course there’s a classifieds notices some industry events additional big discounts for members and a live chat function now will tell you this guys if you’re you’re looking for a silver bullet this is not the place I want you to go most of the members here are more than willing to bend over backwards to help you if you honestly need the help or you honestly want to learn but don’t come on here and put a post that says I’ve got a av9 dodge that’s misfiring what’s the problem and you haven’t done any of your due diligence you haven’t done any of your own diagnostics don’t look for somebody to fix the car for you but there are a lot of people here who will be more glad to help those who are trying to help themselves the chats one area those the forum is another the tech help you won’t even get past the starting gate if you can’t put in you know what you’ve already done the test you’ve already done done your homework all right let’s take a look some of these things in one more depth before we do that though let’s look at what the consumer sees let’s go over here to vehicle owners right off the bat this uses your isp location and this is whether you access this in your mobile phone or your your laptop but wherever you happen to be it’s gonna tell you within the range that you specify where these member shops are because this is coming up near your where I live kind of sad but only got one guy within 10 miles but you know if I have a problem for me he’s gonna be the first guy I call if I need to send you know my neighbor or my son or whatever to a nearby shop he’s probably going to be the first one I talked to let’s just back this up because I want you to be able to see the benefit to you as the shop owner and let’s back out here to a 50 mile radius and take a look at where is he there we go here’s an example see now this fella here he’s issued boss remember there’s his address the location on the map so over here we can use the Google map to get directions phone number hours but let’s what happens if you click on the dot now you see as the shop owner you get this embedded web page where you can include graphics a message to the consumer and there’s the location hours phone number how to get directions to it from Google Maps and then you have all these tabs and you can take care of the services that you offer information about your facility accreditation contact information this even has a Facebook page hours of operation what we accept you know all the good stuff there that as a consumer guys this is where the consumers are going to job here the Generation Y I mean these aren’t kids anymore these Generation Y is up to about 30 years old so this is how they get their information and this is a great resource and this it’s in addition to all the other benefits of being a member of ITN there’s 30 bucks a month to be a business bouncer what a deal so you have a little bit of the consumer side let’s go back to now let’s say the members only side if you remember this is what you get to see again this is you get this if your basic membership or you re paying subscriber and pink subscriber has a little more access than you do you know like I said I’ve been a member for quite a while always make me money always been a great resource I’ve learned a lot from listening in to the forums that keep you up the forum’s the fix helps a great place to learn let’s just go here write down the top checked out here are some of the recent requests from other technicians hey take a few minutes to see if he can help them now you open one up you see what he has to tell you he’s even included a few snapshots so he’s doing trying to do his homework he’s having a tough time so there’s a way that we can find out or help him then we need to do that so there’s a good place to stop on your daily I ATM stop then you come to the forums now the forums I mean and there are several you can pick the ones that you are your favorites that you want to go to all the time you see these are the ones I have selected but if you’re into other things like here’s an HD fleet forum Tool and equipment transmission guys have a place to go there’s a classified forum where you can go check to see maybe somebody’s maybe you’re looking for a tool we have something that you were trying to sell your posting a job looking for a job all kinds of stuff there and you have a logging in recent forum posts again you can tailor them to you know your particular likes and dislikes and let’s go let’s just pick one let’s go to technical discussion I take a look and you’re gonna notice a few things here by the discussions and sometimes they’re going to be on a specific topic problem sometimes it’s just general general information discussion you can always learn something from the note and some of the icons you’ll see this has got a thread start there’s more than one message in that in that post and they’re illustrations could be waveforms stand data pictures the ones with the little Carson will means that there’s a vehicle specific reference and these are cool if you see them ones with the green thumbs up then more than one I think as five members have to give it a thumbs up before it gets the green official green thumb but that means there must be some pretty good stuff in here that definitely worth you taking a look at so let’s just open up that see what we got okay we see we’ve got some pictures that are going along with the story for us to take a look at these are pretty good got the green thumbs up this is referencing a Jetta TDI and then you scroll down a little bit and you see that there’s a lot of replies to this message twelve as a matter of fact but they can be a little hard to to go click on and go back and click on go back so you go to this little icon here and it opens up the single thread view now you see all the replies you see that these guys are replying to this guy and they’re all in order but we can I mean we can pump in here but we really would understand the context of Marcus’s reply to Byron unless we knew what exactly what was going on in the string so let’s just use this tab the expand discussion tab and now I have it all laid out in order and you can see how they’re indented so we know who’s talking to into what makes a little easier to track the discussion if I want to save it I can come over here and save it that will put it in my eye Etienne let’s just say let’s do that we’re looking at a lifetime from Amazon so let’s save that here are the tags I was telling you about let’s say we’re gonna tagged it as oil and how about we do it as lubrication was it tagging any others how about maintenance I don’t know if all these are gonna be correct or not but now we got it saved I can also recommend it if I like it vote for it to get that green thumb and then when I’m done I think that’s it’s on a separate tab so I can close that tab go right back to where I was returned to the complete index and if I have a favorites all I gotta do is hit the tab next favorite and I’m on to my next topic and again you’re gonna the technical theory technical tips technical discussion forums you will learn a lot in by following these discussions adding your two cents don’t be afraid that’s how we learn that’s how we benefit from one another let’s go back to home we looked at the forms now the knowledge base is pretty cool let’s go to the fixed database and I have two choices here at the fixed database let’s say I’m dealing with a problem car I can use this very new new new fairly new feature I can enter in the VIN it’s gonna do the decoding for me or if I have something store and I can choose a previous vehicle that I’ve searched through so there’s two ways you can look or you can use the old style and just build the vehicle yourself let’s say we’re gonna pull up a Chrysler dealing with a drivability issue and notice notice that there’s several to choose from body brakes chassis electrical cooling system even a miscellaneous we’re gonna stick with drivability and this is ninety nine so we’re gonna pick that range now notice that now we got this basic information see this window at the top right now it tells me there are four hundred and twenty seven records relating to this car or to this make model year then I’m putting in already and I want to narrow that down let’s deal with this deal with a misfire you know I just I just narrowed that down to 34 and I can go even further if I want I can come down here to advance the options I can add additional maybes intermittent coal on cold sub steps it says – excuse me subsystems I’m interested in the exact year model engine let’s try that it put us at 99 and it’s a six owner he dive down down to seventeen let’s put let’s see what kind of results we’ve gotten so far now if I find something that matches and let’s just say that we got the Sebring right here we’re gonna take him look over here he’s got nine replies it has been fixed and we’re gonna go check out what that looks like now this is again this is a fella that had an issue that he was having a hard time with so he put it out there to the 75,000 members and now everybody subscribes to the same help requests but it’s out there it’s out there for other people to take a look at now I’m on the reverse side of that I’ve got a problem it’s maybe similar to to Wayne’s but rather than reinvent the wheel I’m gonna go in and look to see if anybody else around the world has had that issue well guess what we did maybe I can learn what’s going on with mine by learning what happened with Wayne so I could read his original story the information he’s dead the related repair history the tests he’s taken the information he has here’s the details of the vehicle VIN mileage trouble codes that he was chasing after the fix he posted it with what he did fine I can give them the message controls I can respond to the requests I can save it if I’m researching this type of problem if there’s a if it’s not fixed yet if it’s still pending I can make a note see when it’s updated this is great if you’ve got teachers if you got students you want them to learn ask them to going to start doing some of the current tech helps and follow along maybe they can make the diagnosis of their own and go back and see what happens if they were right trim view is it is a new set up now so that when you’d print it you do get a nice clean print you’re not pretty like if you ever tried to print a webpage you know you get all this other weird stuff on there this helps say that it would search identify in 2000 anyway we’ve seen here that he’s got nine replies we can open that up and read the replies again we can get information clues something that maybe we want to check on the car in our Bay and see if it’s the same thing and then here’s a fairly new addition related documents and media this has really increased the power of this particular feature if I’m dealing with a chrysler 6 older there are 414 related tech hills with a similar engine there are 56 files on record and 6 related forum posts for the 300 there’s 22 tech tech helps so if I if that’s the only what I’m dealing with I can narrow it down to that the files are pretty cool that goes to the waveform library and this could be waveforms it could be photographs of something that a tech found it could be scanned data but I might find additional information and then there’s this link the identifying and this is telling me that in identification hotline archives 19 bear tracks 35 posted fences 12 recalls maybe there’s something in here I need to know about and if you’re not familiar identify moved into OAM information so what a tag team so I go to the idea of the directed website now I’ve got Chrysler OEM direct information in addition to their existing service and hotline information so what attack team between the two of course she’s not familiar with it identifies as the sister company to ITN so you can see real quick how this is a great resource right here I mean this is really tough to be and then you see the chat you have the the my ITN that we talked about that before here the my saved items that I can use to narrow down what I’m looking for here’s some the tags now we went back before and we put down oil right so let’s see what I have saved for oil in terms I’ve got actually two an oil in the engine sludging so it’s very easy for me to go hit that one tag to recall things I wanted know what again what here’s a good good example what about related vehicles even if I have a Toyota Camry 2.4 liter and now I have another one in my baby maybe I saved something that could relate to that and I can use that tag feature to help bring that back to me again so there’s a lot of good uses for the my ia 10 feature and it’s up to you to put your own up to you know things that you’ve seen that you can put up to share these are some examples of some of the things that I’ve posted as resources so this is not just a take this is a given day ok well I think we’ve covered the tech help forums the resources we’ve talked about we’ve got member locators events meeting events trade publications where there we are there’s a we service information example if you go into the obd2 operation summaries I mean you want to know what causes the cat code on an O six Ford or you can find out exactly right here and you can read up on it and that can only improve your diagnostic ability so there’s a lot a lot of great information in here now it’s grace again we talked about that that’s the fixed form and waveform library archives and if you put something in the fixed database and you go looking for it and you don’t get a solution you can transfer that to the form okay and search across all the forms or maybe you’re just wanting to look up something more general about you want to learn about oxygen sensors there’s 999 records we could narrow that down search subject only how about original posts only and recommended posts five-star posts now we national down to seven probably the ones I want to start with right so let’s take a look and you’ll recognize some of these names like Alvin warm one of our contributors lots of information supplied with you there so there could be some great stuff for you to know again great resource teachers did you know that you can if you’re a member you can get a student access free Kindle for use dude limited to what he can access but it opens up a whole new world of learning opportunities for and then there’s your personal page with all your personal settings and I think that should about covered again I can’t begin to express how much of a resource I think
