How we hack the automotive industry: Carlo De Micheli at TEDxVilnius


when I was nine years old I built a toy car made out of Lego and it was great you could push it around make a crawl across the room but what I really needed was a motor so when a few days later my parents bought me new shiny black toy car it was so fun one of those electric ones that go by themselves and then when they hit a wall they turn around and keep going so fun I took it apart after two minutes took the motor and put it in the Lego car I had built and that was effectively the first car I built myself so 15 years later I meant unpeel yamaki and when I first met him he was sitting next to this white table and under the table was a motorcycle engine and I asked him like what is that and he tells me it’s this two cylinder engine and I created you created that and yeah I designed and built it and is it any good and he’s like yeah well I won my 50th World Championship last week with it well ok these guys actually know what they’re doing so he tells me about this open-source vehicle project and so exciting I take a plane 15 hours to Hong Kong to meet Francisco Leo who’s a founder of the project and when I get there and just get a phone call like telling me just follow the signs it’s super easy to get here except all the signs are in Chinese so I finally get there and I expect you know all these car is there and I really want to drive one but all I see is this so he tells me let’s go out to lunch and we have lunch – the food is great there and when we come back right after lunch there are three vehicles that are ready to drive like where did those come from Lee for people built them in their lunch break and I thought this this was amazing this was revolutionary how did they build them I was used to I’ll you know the car industry where you have a huge factory hundreds of workers all the robots and the soldiering and the sparks and the painting going on and here for people just build three cars and their lunch break that there had to be something bigger behind that and that something bigger was open-source so open source works really well in software you have Linux and UNIX from the 60s 90s and now 60% of the websites we visit every day run on open source software so it’s huge and softer but how to apply it to open source hardware well have identified three key elements that work in opens to start an open source software that can make open source hardware successful as well and these are ease-of-use contribution and business by ease-of-use I mean things have to be easy and how easy is it to build tabi well we have a small video of that that’s 41 minutes and 44 seconds with these two people and you don’t need any special tools or soldiering or anything so anyone can really build tabi the second aspect is contribution so tab is released under an open-source license called Creative Commons everyone can download tabby where can I improve it build things from it and no money is involved you can build things and profit from them the only thing you have to do is credit the people who have to work who have worked on the project before you so profit and this ties us to the third point which is business so to scale things like these you need an underlying business we see this with other open-source hardware projects like Arduino Arduino the board used to accelerate the development of new electronic devices and their 1 million of these boards around there and right now another one is open source ecology for example they’ve built 50 machines and they’re developing and building these 50 machines to run a civilization so a modern village with all the modern comforts and it’s all open source these are great examples but there’s also 3d printing it went from being a toy for geeks to something that’s actually used by the Royal Air Force to build parts for jets and that lowers their maintenance and distribution costs so it’s something on which you can create a real business so Henry Chesbrough in his book about open innovation talked about how the markets limit what firms can create so when you’re developing a new product you’re brainstorming you have all of these ideas but then you need to get a market fit for them and that really limits what you can do with open source hardware it’s exactly the opposite you start from an idea and you branch that idea out and create lots of different products with different people from all over the world for all different markets but this was not enough for us so we tried to find out what we can improve in this automotive industry which is traditionally very closed and the first thing we tried to improve is logistics did you know that 20% of the price you pay for a new car is actually going into logistics that’s not building the car that’s moving the parts around and getting the vehicle shipped to you that’s one fifth of the price you’re paying and in the same container we can normally fit for traditional vehicles you can fit 16 tabbies so that really lowers the logistics price the second thing is maintenance you saw how fast you can build tabi so you can not only build it as fast you can take it apart that fast as well so changing parts is really simple and you can do it over your lunch break now we talked about maintenance logistics but there’s one thing I introduced in the beginning which is we really needed a motor and we’ve developed an integrated hybrid engine for tabia it’s really new its includes both technologies series and parallel technologies of hybrid engines and it’s the most compact engine ever built in this category and it’s built specifically for tabi so once you put all of those things together you have a great vehicle but it’s not a finished vehicle it’s really a framework on which you can build other vehicles for different markets from different needs and all around the world but how can we make that even easier for anyone to build a vehicle like a city car for example so we built urban tabia Orban tabi is a city car it’s a framework that lets you build any city car with two seats and it already complies with all the regulations the tightest EU and US regulations which otherwise someone who’s not an expert of the sector can have a hard time with so anyone can build their own city car or start a production of city cars and started their own business building city cars in their own country and this brings us to worldwide movement we really want to make a change and to do this we need everyone to participate so we already had interest from over 71 countries the one in blue in this map and started relationships with partners in these countries and now we’re trying to involve the whole world so you can help us color this map so in the end what we want to do altogether is bring a change in and out in the automotive industry which is an industry and a mark whose products are used by billions of people every day thank you
