Gateway to College & Career Pre- Apprentice Program at SDCE

>>Lekenya: Its six of us, six pre-apprentices
All different trades. They’re basically just
providing us the basic tools for the
actual trades that we want to get in to. So we
class time, then we have
work site time. So we go to class two days a week
then three days a week we are actually on the work site, which we are helping build
a 26-unit apartment complex.
Keiasha: You’re always moving you’re always doing something, you’re always learning something new
You’re always meeting new people, because sometimes its not the same
people on the job sites. You’re even interacting
with the community, because the community comes out and they’re like ‘hey’
‘what are you doing?’ and when they see women too
they just get even more happy. They’re just
encouraging you to keep doing what you’re doing so
its just amazing being on the job site.
>>Stephan: We’re pretty tight. We’re a pretty tight group. I personally tell them all the time
that if you have anything wrong, anything you wanna talk about
, if there’s something on the job site that you feel is like
complicated, or you’re not understanding, always come find me and I’ll be more than happy to help.
Building a friendship, and
everything like that. I’m seeing these guys for the next
four or five years. Believe it or not, and
its just been a great time to really just bond with each other
because we’re not so different. Every body comes from different backgrounds
but at the end of the day, we’re pretty much all the same. Recently we’ve been
installing all the ducting up here that you see, thats connected to the faucets
Installing these little boots up here and taping them down
Running straps, making sure everything is sitting up high
We’re running this ducting, that’s made for the heat
, and we’re basically putting it all into this furnace right here
where its gonna be pumping out the heat.
I’m 21, believe it or not.
I’m the youngest out of the group, and
the foreman of the group, so its pretty, I have a little bit
of weight on my shoulders, but I enjoy the challenges
>>Leynka: Within like the first two days of the program
I lost my child care.
And within 24 hours
The case managers here: James, Anisha, and Flora, they all
made calls, put in the foot work and
went and spoke to people, and by the next day
I had my child care, and its still good to this day
so, I felt thats a major help.
because without the child care
I won’t be able to do anything.
>>Keiasha: Before, I would start something, but I would never really finish, and just
accomplishing this is just so big for me, and
it just really makes me happy that..it let’s me know that I can finish something
, and whatever I set my mind to, I’m gonna succeed in it.
>>Stephan: Every time I’m here, they’re asking me ‘so what’s the next step Stephan?’
‘What are you doing next, what’s your goal after that?’
and its just those little things that help motivate you.
And for them to know that, ‘ hey you can do it. I heard you’re doing great.’
Its just the motivation that keeps me going, and they supply that for us.
>>Keiasha: They’ve helped me with everything and just
anything. Even if its not school related.
They’re just always there. Physical, I guess, emotional support
Just whatever it is that I’m going through, or that I need
they always try to find and get me what it is that I need
They just, they’re just there for everything, anything
>>Lekenya: Its not only paying the bills but its
teaching me the skills that I’m going to need in the long run.
I know when I look back, I’m gonna be like ‘it was all worth it.’
It was worth the career change
It was worth starting at a lower level. I can clearly see
everything that I’m working towards when I’m taking this route.
>>Keiasha: Again, when I say its really huge, its really huge. I really
feel like I turned my life around, and you can tell from others and
teachers, case managers, family like
this is a new Keiasha.
>>Stephan: I didn’t have
a good sense of direction, when I was finishing up
like, I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn’t know
how to do it, or where to start
So being in this program, it just basically put out the pathway
You do this first, and then you’ll get here, and as long as you work hard
and do whatever you do to be the best at it, you will be successful.
