From Technician to Distributor


hi my name is Josh Melo I’m a Mac O’Toole’s distributor and this is my mobile store before I became a Matco tools distributor I worked as a auto mechanic for six years and I also worked in the optical industry as a lab manager I became a macro distributor because with my experience the automotive industry and some sales experience I’ve had in the past I thought it would be a good fit for me and my family hi my name is Duane sharp I’m a Matco tools distributor the experience that I needed to do this job or this business was developed over about thirty five years of experience the the early years that I had as a technician trained me to learn how to use tools what the purposes of each tool was what different bolts and nuts were and things like that and helped me in a mechanic’s environment to learn all of the things that I needed to apply what I’ve learned then to what I do now having been a mechanic in the past I found it to be very valuable when I’m trying to demo products for customers because I’m familiar with them it’s also important if you’ve been in the field to keep up on all the new tools as they’re coming out as well so that you can be on top of all the new technology and bring that to your customers all that experience of knowing the mechanics and knowing the tools how to work on the machines all of that pays off with working with these guys to help them decide on what tools they need in some cases actually teach them what they’re working on they can it can be a challenge for them to know the systems that they’re working on and what tools are required and I have enough knowledge and experience in all those areas to accommodate their needs and show them what they need I much prefer working as a macro distributor selling tools than being a mechanic it’s much less physically demanding and it’s much more flexible I’m not nailed down to one place I get a change of scenery every half-hour or so when I go from one shop to the next and I get to interact with a lot of different people I consider a lot of my customers to be friends and I look forward to seeing them every week the major difference is this is so much easier in the respect of physical labour as opposed to being you know a technician crawling around on heavy pieces of machinery or cars it’s not hard work it’s fun and I think that’s the contrast that I would make when you’re a technician you go home at night you are physically worn out with this job there’s some physical activity but unless you make it harder than it has to be it’s not hard I wanted to become a macro distributor when I saw the opportunity online because the low startup cost and my experience in the automotive field I thought it was a good fit for me I’m much happier doing what I’m doing it’s very rewarding I get to provide a service to customers that they really need and it’s a rewarding feeling to know that the knowledge that I’m bringing to the customer is helping them to put the right tools in their hands it’s a rewarding thing to do I’ve worked on my life to reach this point is one of the best things I’ve ever done and it is very rewarding anybody that was buying a new business like I did would have the same apprehensions but I’m glad I made the change I did and went with Mac oh it’s been a good decision for me and my family and not a day goes by that I’m sorry I did it
