Economy Stories – Digitizing manufacturing

Industry 4.0 is about the digital connectivity of all the things that take place in a factory. My name is Thomas. I am the founder
and managing director of ProGlove. In production it is ultimately always a question of producing things more quickly, or of much better quality, performing individual production steps
in half the time. Secondly, it is about bringing people
into the digital world. If I can get workers to use other machinery,
I can achieve more efficiency on the whole. Our intelligent glove has one main function at the moment – the documentation of production steps. In principle we have integrated the bar code reader
that everybody is familiar with – a little “pistol” – into a glove. Our product is primarily aimed at workers. How can we make their lives and their jobs
a little bit easier? Anyone who has ever worked in a factory knows that there are monotonous production stages that can also be strenuous, so anything
that makes the job easier is a bonus. We still believe in the role
of the human worker in production and it is a question of involving him, or her,
better in new digital production processes. There is this idea that soon workers
will no longer be needed in production. But we don’t believe
this is the case. We believe that humans are much more capable of learning and are much more flexible than a normal robotic arm. You just have to give people the right tools
so that they can work with the digital world. This is what we do.
We focus on the worker. You have to be a bit careful with the expression “industrial revolution” because you can usually only use it after the fact. But it is our view that the technologies that are now being introduced could increase efficiency by a factor of 10. And if that really is the case,
then we are facing a major transformation.
