CU-Boulder Alumni Profile: Astronaut/Instructor Jim Voss

During my time as a Buff in space, I have
deployed satellites,
I’ve done science experiments. I’ve flown on five different space shuttle flights.
And then I lived for six months on board
the International Space Station.
And in fact, I got to do the longest
space walk in history — almost nine hours long.
You lay there on your back anticipating, as
the countdown
decreases and when you get to the actual
moment of launching,
it’s truly a momentous, exciting
moment for you. Everything is
shaking and rattling and when the
launch bolts release and you head into
space
not only is it physically exciting, it’s
mentally exciting because you’re
accomplishing one of your real dreams in
life
in being able to go to space. I believe
that my CU-Boulder
education gave me the
opportunity to become an astronaut.
I’m going to be teaching a class called
introduction to human spaceflight.
We hope to open it up to all students on
campus so that
those people in business or law or
education —
any other school here — the students will
be able to come and learn about space
flight, because our nation’s space
program
uses people of all disciplines. If I were
going to advise a student
on attending CU-Boulder, I would tell
them
that they should take full advantage of
being here. It’s a wonderful educational experience,
and they should study hard to get the full
benefit of that educational opportunity.
Many come to the University
of Colorado specifically
for the engineering education that they
can get that might help them to go on
to work in our nation’s space program.
They’re so interested, they have so many
questions and
they show a real love of, not only
education, but space flight as well.
I hope to spend the rest of my career here,
actively helping to inspire the
next generation of space explorers.
