CarSciGuys – Importance of Wheel Torque

this is Joe this is Matt and we are the
car sci guys and on this show we
explore the why do instead of how
to when it comes to properly servicing
and maintaining your vehicle hello
welcome back so today we’re going to
talk about wheel torque and the
importance of torquing properly so first
things first we want to really hit on
where to find the wheel torque so if you
have to pull a wheel off your car or
maybe you like pulling the wheel off your
car it’s very important that you tighten
the wheel bolts or lug nuts to the
proper specification typically you can
find this in the owners manual or if for
some reason it’s not there you can go to
a repair manual or go talk to your local
dealership more than likely they’ll
divulge that information yeah it’s not
super proprietary it’s a safety thing
it’s safety yes so that that would be
step one is to find the proper torque
specification
when you’re putting the wheel back on
you always want to make sure and start
the wheel bolts are lug nuts by hand we
would recommend using something like
this
it’s a breaker bar got a nice little 90
degrees on there and you know started in
yeah maybe maybe make it 90 just get
snugged up really really nice absolutely
and then the most important part is you
don’t want to torque the wheel with an
impact you want to make sure you torque
it with a torque wrench of some sort
we’ve got a couple different styles here
we’ve got our click style this is
probably the more common great for
wheels very accurate this would be a
good option tightening wheels and then
we also have our digital torque wrench
this gives you a lot more options but
also very accurate and you’ll make sure
you get it correct and why is it
important to torque the wheels but with
one we don’t want anything flying off
when you’re going down the road that
obvious reason I mean you watch racing
right and the guys on there he’s putting
a little nuts on or the wheel nut on and
it kind of gets it and then the car
leaves pit lane and yeah by the time you
hit then pit lane it’s rolling past the
cars a good point with that too is they
use impacts in racing but those are
specially calibrated yes to only go to a
certain torque spec and you know we’re
gonna do a little demonstration in a
minute as to why we use why we highly
recommend you use a torque wrench versus
an impact right
you know and really it all boils down to
we don’t want to damage any components
when we’re doing this we want to make
sure that things are not only tight but
that they’re not over tight and that
would avoid any damage to components on
the vehicle so we’re gonna do a
demonstration with an impact and a
torque stick this is uh this is what a
lot of repair shops use in particular
tire and wheel shops this torque stick
we’re just doing a demonstration so this
one is not for this car per se but the
spec on this torque stick is a hundred
and nine Newton meters so we’re gonna
tighten our one bolt here and I didn’t
even hammer that hard on it and we’re
gonna go and see what it actually breaks
loose that we have our torque wrench set
for 109 and we’re gonna see what it
breaks loose at okay it broke loose at 152
Newton meters so that’s actually what
that torch stick tightened it to without
even hammering on it very hard so you can see how it would be very easy
to over tighten these lug nuts or
wheel bolts in this case using an
impact thanks for watching thanks for
watching
