right now there are more cars in the US than people old enough to drive the NGO that explains rush hour in the greater Jacksonville area and why Florida State College has thriving programs for automotive technicians if you look at the amount of cars out there most households have two or three or four cars in our driveways if you think about how many times you know just need an oil change how many times a malfunction indicator lamp may come on a dashboard how many times that the vehicle needs brakes or tires there’s a lot of business out there master technician Jeffrey Alderson agrees there’s a high demand for people with technical skills alderson graduated from Florida State College with an Associate in Science degree in automotive service management technology back in 2001 he says the program gave him the tools he needed to be ready to work right away they had everything laid out real well as far as curriculum and stages that you would go through entry-level mechanics and tool familiarize ation and then going right into actually how to work on the cars that comes from the college’s strong working partnerships with car dealerships and repair shops in fact General Motors chose Florida State College to train its new service technicians eight weeks in school getting pure academics and the basic training then you come to the dealership for eight weeks and you spend eight weeks with a mentor technician who’s generally a master technician I mean this guy is the best of the best hands-on is a lot different than reading it out of a book Robert Jones says that hands-on experience is critical if you want to work in his shop Jones is the assistant service manager and shop foreman at key buick hyundai he works closely with the college to make sure students get trained on the latest technology the qualifications nowadays it’s just unbelievable when I started and I said I’ve been here 31 years when I started this here in 1978 we had the service manual about it’s thick now we have a very comprehensive database through General Motors that we go through and it gets updated nightly it’s so comprehensive by the time we get done with everything in our program the the students will be able to diagnose complicated network systems and you know and some of our more important creature comforts that we enjoy in Alderson could not only diagnose he could repair just about anything bumper to bumper just ask his boss and he’s one of these people he wants to be the best and love what he’s doing you got to be happy you got to want to come to work in the morning and you look forward to it because it’s a challenge
