Automotive Repair Process – What To Know Before Going to a Body Shop

hello I’m Brian Graham body shop director for Preston Auto Body today we’re going to show you the part of the repair process also we’re gonna let you know that it is your choice on where you have a vehicle repaired so first off we have this BMW x3 here and what we need to do first is we have to bring the vehicle in do a complete disassembly recognize where the damage is located an aid to help us do so is we have these repair procedures that are presented to us through BMW telling us exactly what needs to be repaired and how to repair it as well so once we do the disassembly we will then know what needs to be repaired based off of the repair procedures so at this point let’s let the guys get to work yeah that needs to be replaced okay now that we’re getting the we had got the disassembly done now we move to the estimating stage where we actually write up what is wrong with the car what needs to be replaced some key points that we look for when we do a disassembly it’s hidden damage hidden damage on this car if you remember the way the car looks that bumper was on it you really couldn’t see this reinforcement and once we got the buffer off we discovered that the reinforcement is bent as well as the crush box these pieces here are actually designed to go on the vehicle to absorb the energy so that the frame rail doesn’t absorb the energy or doesn’t crush and get demolished these are actually bolt on parts so this vehicle actually performs the way it should have performed at the time of the accident however if these items were not replaced at the time that we did our damage analysis and did our repair then this could be a safety issue causing airbag timing not to work correctly as well as energy not travelling through the vehicle the way it should so now that we have the disassembly and we have the estimate part done now with next stage is we take it to our frame machine and we do a measurement to make sure all the structural components are within specifications alright now that we have the disassembly process done we’ve taken the vehicle all apart we’ve recognized where the damage is what’s damaged we have one more step of the process to get a complete damage report or a repair plan and the final step in order to get the repair plan is we must set the vehicle up and measure the vehicle using our laser measuring system this will give us the exact specifications of the OEM repairs how they want the vehicle to what it should be as far specification goes so what we’re doing right now is we actually have it set up technician Scott here is actually doing the final setup and putting the targets in place now he’s going to come over and he’s going to check to see if everything is in specifications so come on over we’ll take a look at that as you can see the length the height and the width is all within specifications so this vehicle passes as being in specifications we won’t need to do any pulling or aligning of the structural components so at this point our damage appraisal is complete we have a good repair plan at this point we will send it to our parts department and they will order the parts and we will get to work on this vehicle now we’ve done all of our damage analysis we’ve found all the damaged hidden parts we found the parts that were exposed we’ve done a set up and measure we’ve ordered our parts so now what the next step is is that we have to check in our parts and make sure that they’re all correct make sure they’re not damaged and then we get it off go send it off to paint okay so looking at this in the beginning we showed you where the reinforcement was damaged this is the damaged one and then what we do is a process called mirror matching so we’re going to take the two reinforcements and we’re going to lay them side by side we’re gonna look at them and make sure that everything is the same all the bolt holes are in the same spot and everything looks to be correct on this reinforcement the other part that we showed you a very critical part was the crush box this part like I said earlier was designed to crush to absorb the energy so that you don’t very important piece of the puzzle so looking at this one and comparing it to the new one as you can see they don’t look exactly alike because once crushed and ones not but they are the same identical part so that that’s all good there so now we just finished checking in all the smaller pieces and different items and then we send to all of our sheet metal over for paint and this particular car here we’re going to actually paint all the pieces off of the car then we’ll bring them back over and put the car together so we’ll show you the paint process next okay now that we’ve went through the repair process as far as the planning we actually brought the car in we did the full assembly then we wrote the repair order basically the repair procedures we use them to find out what parts need to be replaced then we set it up and we measured the vehicle once we got the measurement done we checked in our parts make sure all the parts were correct so now we’re at the stage where we’re actually applying paint to the parts and in order to do that there’s a prepping process that we have to go through to prep the vehicle we actually have to sand the part down and then we have to clean the part with special cleaners once that is done we bring them into our paint booth and that’s when the painter will come in and actually apply the paint okay in order for us to get an excellent color match we have several ways in which we do that to achieve that we can utilize the paint code that is listed in on the vehicle another way that we do it we have a camera that we can actually take a picture of the the paint that’s existing on the vehicle put it into the computer and the computer will actually pick on excellent color match for us jesse is actually doing that at this moment as you can see Jesse’s checking multiple locations and that’ll give us our best match so once he completes that then he’ll take it over to the mixing system put it into the computer and it’ll come up with a paint code for us now we have all of our paint mixed up and we’re ready to start applying the paint Jesse’s going to come in and into the booth at this time and start to apply the sealer which is the first thing that we do the sealer is used so that the base coat will have something to adhere to so the paint will stick once we seal it and all that has dried then we will apply the base coat which is the color and then we’ll apply the clear coat okay now the sealer has been applied and we’ll let it flash off for 15 minutes and then we’ll put the base coat right over top of the sealer okay now the base coats been applied and we’re letting it flash off and then we’ll apply the clear coat as you can see the base coat adds the color to the vehicle the clear coat actually adds the protection the UV protection as well as the gloss so we’ll let this flash off and then we’ll apply the clear coat now the clear coat has just been applied so as you can see it’s got its gloss it looks just like a factory finished the next thing we’re going to do is we’re going to actually close the doors to the booth will turn the baking cycle on will actually bake the paint at 140 degrees for 20-30 minutes and then the paint will cure out be nice and durable and when we’re done with that then the vehicle will go back over to reassembly we’ll put the vehicle back together okay we’ve reached final assembly they have just finished putting the hood on the vehicle we have a few emblems to put on once we’re done with all that then we’ll send it to our detail Department they’ll give it a good cleaning and then we’ll QC it to make sure everything has been done that should be done we’ll check it to the repair order and then we’ll deliver it to the customer I never had a bad experience with them it’s excellent they do a great job they have a good crew to work with it and to have a good people to get communicate with them they take care of the customers and look excellent they did a good good job on it and they did the way I want so I’m happy with it and I know they fit me like as a family fast convenient and always here for you Preston Auto Body just call 888 so frog is your choice
