Automotive Design with Blender Year 2

Automotive Design with Blender Year 2

Toula my name is Pierre Andrew Yanni and the digital modeling manager at assemblers in the UK and we’ll get to mate’ll in a second first of all let me say it’s an honor for us a touch on motors to be here on stage with everybody else such as movie makers scientists and you know what do you do we do cars so if it’s pretty cool and again thank you very much for having us here so again we’ll just go I’ll just go through a quick introduction of Tata Motors and then the T will describe what we’ve done with blender in the last year and then follow out with our present and future needs were blender and followed by what I call the blender effect our contribution to blender and q and A’s will be after the presentation basically TM ET c stands for Tata Motors European Technical Center we are in our 11th anniversary in the Coventry in the UK we a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors in India this is the shot of studio 2 as you can see we do full set full service design so you can see the Nexon models as well as clay models in the background what I like to call us at gme TC we are what’s called what I like to call the tip of the spear so as anything that’s RNG and really advanced technologies we are the ones who experiment it and then we’re the ones who roll this we’re all out there through the rest of the company so we are uk-based Centre for autumn of the design what that means is we can start from a sketch and then go all the way to nerve surfacing all the way to a show car such as an exon and finishing off with a production car of the next one which was done in the UK and will be on sale next year this is a shot of the NAIC the national autumn of it Innovation Center it’ll be $150,000,000 of 150 billion pounds facility which she will be shared between Tata Motors Jaguar Land Rover advanced design award manufacturing group and the UK government I just had a tour of this facility on Friday on Thursday and it’s it’s gonna be a great R&D facility and I’m hoping by that time we’ll have full a full team dedicated to rendering animation in blender most likely so we’ll move into that facility next year and this is a shot of the current construction and it’s a very exciting time to be at GM e.t.c so without further ado this is material she’s the one who she’s the reason I’m here so let’s talk about blender so so yeah this year I’m going to talk about everything we’ve done the past year just going straight a bit for a new haven’t seen the toko don’t remember going to speak a bit about the process in eme TC and everything we achieved in one year so basically to remember from last year that’s our process we are using blender in the modeling phase in this sketch modeling because that’s where we need to have more time we need to experiment more things on the shapes of the car interior exterior we have a lot of changes to do as well at that time so blender allows us to have a lot of flexibility in the model compared to areas and compared to the nerve surfacing so since last year we keep working on blender in discuss modding phase and a little bit further away if we need to try something to have like a very big modification on the model that happens sometimes and since last year like this summer I was in India for almost a month in the in the mother mother company of Tata Motors and over there I had a two months project with them where I introduced them blender in the process modeling so I get two months to show the advantages of using blender compared to the advantages of using areas and basically had two vehicles to build at the same time and show in how long I could work with blender compared to various and how we can just go faster and so in GM et Cie last last year we try to have a full exterior milling in hot water straight from blender that’s the first fail we have the shape of the car was very really too complicated for our sub structure to handle the STL afterwards and to cut the STL as as I wanted to build a hot model so we needed to go back to nerves and for that we needed so to have my aversion insight for going through polygonal tuners by going from IGS so that I wasn’t running for us and if we have a very complicated model we can’t go directly from blender to engineering but we have to go through nerves and another thing with experimented for the first time is we’ve done a complete interior in blender from from scratch from sketch and after like it was a week of work after a week we were ready to show the interior to our chairman for like an official review without going through any clay model or anything so that was the first attempt we’ve done for that that was good proof of concept for using blender in the company as modeling process something we experimented as well I talked a little bit about at last year was doing some animation tests and rendering tests so we had the scene we had like that’s the check out that a checker has been released a prominent I think and we had this geo where we are working and we just like asked two of our motors they are doing a little bit of visualization as well say okay take those two do take the car do a 30 seconds animation and see what’s going at Padian so we analyze the very peak lack of organization because we didn’t give them any stir abroad like they just have 30 second animation occur in the studio and at the end there are no organization no process nothing so we started to think about having a process digitization process inside and as well we found out that it takes a huge amount of time to have that done and as we are a very very small team in advanced design that we are for and here and we are sweet doing visualization and at the same time we are doing modeling as well we don’t really have the time to do everything so I script and I know that was my first script and that’s not an easy one I build automatic atom to make automatic renderings and automatic animation to have a car a wheel an environment and everything mixed together and give fire so the goal of this add-on was to produce first high quality rendering with blender inside inside the company but it was more comparing two different model or two different campaigns or like two different something and in the same environment in the same dynamic so if we have an animation it would like how the reflections of the exterior environment are going to reflect on the cows and see going to shapes compare the shapes compare compare everything between different cards so you can import whichever car you want in the same environment if you want to if you want to import the truck that we worked as well so Ali works I have three fires first right I have the body of the car or the track as long as it as long as it as wields works I have the file of the wheel separately so basically I can put whichever we done in whichever car and I have a throughout fire with an environment I combine all those three files as a link in a force file where I import rig system based on three dimension diameter of the wheels the wheelbase of the car and the track so then I can have the location of the wheels at the good place compared to the vehicles and I can have the height of the vehicles as well so everything is rate on that system and then after the add-on just analyzed the environment file take see how many cameras it as if the cameras are animated or not is going to run there which which single cameras and if it’s animated going to analyze if the first one and the last one I’m going to render whichever frame between the two frames and save everything in separate folders obviously so then if you imagine that Friday evening I have to give renderings for Monday and I really don’t want to spend my weekend I work just checking if the renderings are done I just press that button and on Monday I come back and I have my all my images done from all my cameras and I just said God got to see my director and say that’s your images I’ve saved that location it’s like great thank you so that’s basically what have done this entire year so what’s next for us now in Jim it is here and even even in data matters we are still trying to improve our process modeling and we are we still have the same issues than last year but like having a specific certified motif here that does not shrink the car still want to have some more flexibilities and proportional editing as well and that most most likely what we really really want and what we really it’s to avoid the step maya going from blender to various so having a bridge between polygons and modeling to NURBS without an extra step so then we are still doing some research and development in insights to try to have some real real time and virtual rendering inside to have like interactive videos with the Schurmann so maybe have like headset infinities and we are still looking for improving our process and go further in the future of the visualization to keep keep on with the competition of the other companies so now that pure fusion thank you basically if you look in this slide I like to call it that what’s called the blender effect first thing that happened well after we deploy blender was my boss say you need to submit this as a technical paper so I did it’s called a no Vista so we submitted this paper now it’s in the official archives like this but it’s about what’s it’s a leading edge technology and also a promising technology then they get to the finals but now it’s really you know inside the company’s base of knowledge also as we said we use it now in Cass advanced which is computers i we use it in animation rendering VR R&D and big the next big one for me is to assist our engineers if you look at this slide this is a Windtunnel slide and they actually use the used blender without me knowing it and then they ask is can you help and basically it’s just he take one shot render it toss they take another shot render it toss it so I’m like yeah I don’t know how to script that so that’s why I’m here and see if anybody knows I think the person from the astronomic Center because he is doing a little bit something like this and I don’t know maybe not in the room he’s taking like she remembered it took on Friday yeah she was taking some data from the autonomic Center and translated it and it was silly simulation so that’s kind of what we’re yeah if you hear me if you can get in contact with this what’s interesting to me is we use blender and we’ve come to find out oh okay well let’s see if we can help each other out I also like to talk about our contribution to blender Matilda started a industrial design group specifically for industrial design used in blender Rainer is still here from Kiska Kiska and TM e.t.c are linked now with a nondisclosure agreement and strategic tie-up so we are starting to form you know a little cartel as mate’ll says she spent two months in India and she just blew everybody away with the use of blender in advanced design so design in India now is using blender the last bit will be Italy I’ll probably make a trip to Italy before the end of the year and I will make sure to preach the gospel of blender my good friend Andrew price I love you the reason being blender guru for the weakest blender user in the room me I’m just interested in getting the car shaded light it okay pretty yay so move on so we did buy the plugins for letting Skype rolling Studios and for me those are examples of you know plugins that work in our automotive workflow and if those work then we can share those you know share the knowledge with other automotive OEMs and this way we can start growing them you know the blender base of knowledge and the use of blender in animal design on LinkedIn the gentleman who just joined is from Volkswagen and he should have a very very big interest in using blender as well also and then here I’m also two more things on the part of the UK Auto Council on digital tools so basically automakers in the UK meet you know a couple of times a year and we discussed the use of digital tools and autumn of design and I’ve just started to tell them that you should think about blender and see how they could use blender and other uses and let’s see was there anything else oh one more thing is you know but shield has been the advocate for Tata and in the future she will most likely break away from modeling altogether even though she’s really talented at north modeling but she will most likely become more part of the animation and visual asian stream so I think for years to come you have a solid advocate for blender at TM et Cie and finally I didn’t hear a couple of things such as one is that I gonna make a donation to blender and while I don’t sign the cheques I will make sure to push that agenda forward and hopefully we’ll make a donation before the end of the year and if you have any questions please come see us and we love to talk to you so once again thank you very much for having us
