Automotive Design at UWTSD Swansea College of Art

the automatic design course based at Swansea college of art it’s basically three years course for the BA Honours and then we got an EM desk which is the integrated master we literally start from scratch in year one teaching the students how to represent the lake whole in three dimensions so make sure that they can visualize side view from 3/4 3/4 and of course bearing in mind what’s inside the vehicle so not just the outer skin but a little element of engineering is it’s very welcome the second year is very important because this is when we engage with industry typically they will come down they give us a brief and then the students will start to work as a group so this is the first time where they kind of undertake a task with the client sometimes they give us the opportunity to do a factory tool so we will go for example to see in Jaguar Land Rover or Lotus it’s happened in the past and it’s an eye-opener because it’s the first time that they can see what what the design studio is really like how do they make cars interiors and exteriors the third ear is where they gain all this skill learning in the second year they put them together and they basically are playing solo the major project is when they set up a brief lamp by themselves it could be in the case of or our automotive design course could be a motorcycle can be a car we invite them to see the vehicle in a way that effectively gets conceived in industry so five to seven years ahead in the future so you know some energy is going to be in production they have to anticipate trends and eventually produce this quarter scale model made in clay initially and then the clay would became a fiberglass model and and that would be the final final exhibition the stuff in the ultimo design course as industry background we all try to transfer this knowledge and passion to our students and we are simulating here what is the workflow in industry we believe that externality is important so we are always calling guest lecture from industry excellent successful stories we had Peter Wilkins from McLaren graduated few years ago back with a two hundred thousand pound supercar driving it with the chief designer Frank steel and so on and you know for the students was really interesting to see that can happen I like to think we are a Dream Factory the students are here obviously they coming here with a creative eye and we are giving them the tool to express themselves and materialize the dream it’s a very elite trades being but I always push them to achieve the dreams because rims can become reality you
