My name is Don Schumacher.
I’m the auto body and automotive
program director.
We have a number of certificates.
We have three different ones
that are specific to auto body.
One is going to be a structural, one
is non-structural, and one is refinish.
Basically structural revolves around,
ok, your car has been in an accident.
It’s had a heavy hit.
And then we have also the non-structural,
which is removing dings and dents.
Then we have the refinish, and that involves,
you’ve got to be able to color match a vehicle.
Understanding toners, what they do to paint,
how we finish off the color with the clear coat
and the processes of making it shine and
match the car like it was before it came in.
To be honest with you, we see a lot of students
coming in that really don’t have any skills.
However, we work on those things.
We do a lot of skills building in here.
I can take students that basically have never
used a screwdriver or a wrench and bring them
into this program, and by the end
of the program they can paint a car.
We give them the basics.
We give them what we like
to call some life skills
that will get them great
jobs for their whole future.
The automotive world is, right
now, expanding exponentially.
The amount of jobs out there are numerous.
And it’s not just saying, hey, you’re
going to be the guy that’s going
to be stuck sanding and pulling dents.
You can be the painter.
You can be the person that’s doing all
the framework, the heavy pulls on the cars
that are coming in, in heavy collisions.
You can work this into becoming
an insurance adjuster.
You stick around the industry long
enough you can be a shop foreman
if you want to move up to the front.
You could be the manager of the business.
There’s all kinds of opportunities.
