Automotive Careers

[Reporter] Turning their internships into careers. Two automotive students from May River
High School have been hired by two local
car dealerships to be technicians.
Representatives from Hilton Head BMW and Hilton Head Lexus we’re at the school
today congratulating the students.
Cameron Lao interned at Lexus for
more than a year and Robert Horton has
interned with BMW for about three months.
The two students have learned a lot on
the job and are excited to begin their
careers in the automotive field. [Cameron Lao] I’ve learned like you know specialties like
towards like certain brands and stuff like
certain things you got to do with some
stuff and I’ve actually learned new
skills and like real life skills you
know how to treat stuff in like real life and
time management I would assume. [Robert Horton] Oil changes tire
services right now I’m actually
programming cars doing updates on them
to actually get the yearly update on
them. [Reporter] Representatives from the dealership
say they’re impressed with the students
mechanical skills and will be sending
the soon-to-be employees to several
different trainings to acquire industry
certifications. [Evan Kalogeropoulos] Cameron immediately is very bright so we were able to tell that
right off the top he’s intuitive you
could tell he’s got that technical moxie
and he’s a team player got right in
there got it involved right away jumped
in with both feet and has this aptitude
that has really fit well with our
culture. [Michael Milligan] He connects from his eyes to his hands I think he still got a lot to
learn he’s got the ability to understand
the systems in his head just applying it
to the actual car is a little bit
different I think the hands-on that
he’ll experience more and more with us
is gonna be helpful he’s starting out
with basic things with us at this point
and they will get more complicated as
time goes on. [Reporter] The students say they love working on cars and hope one day to
become Certified Master Technicians. [Robert] I like just being able to fix something
and be proud of what I do and make
everyone else happy about it. [Cameron] It’s just
the mechanical fixing things you know
just fixing things taking apart see how
they work and you know knowing that they
help with someone out. [Reporter] The students will
start working full-time after graduation. At May River High School
Ron Lopes Beaufort County School District.
