Auto Repair: How to Replace the Parking Brake Cable


if your car continues to move even after engaging your emergency parking brake you might have a faulty parking brake cable hi I’m Barbara Terry with Auto MD the parking brake assembly wears out over time replacing it may prevent an accident parts and tools needed for this project you will need the following parts parking brake cable and possibly brake shoes and drums you will also need the following tools instead of screwdrivers set of socket and a ratchet jack stands floor jack breaker bar torque wrench your own vehicles components and parts may differ so always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for details for your safety we recommend wearing safety glasses latex gloves and closed toed shoes when working on your vehicle park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake put your transmission in neutral and try to push the car if the car moves your parking brake cable may be broken or out of adjustment to start the repair place your transmission in park and chalk the front wheels release the parking brake cable disconnect the rear parking brake cable and the front cable from the equalising bar make sure to mark which way the cables are routed through the chassis remove any parts necessary to gain access to the bottom of the parking brake control assembly remove the front cable from the pivot hole at this point the front cable should be removed from the assembly to replace the rear cable you’ll have to securely jack up the rear end once completed remove the wheel and tire also remove the brake drum from the hub next on the wheel side of the backing plate disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever attached to the brake shoe and pull the cable through now replace the damaged cable and begin reassembling start by sliding the rear cable through the backing plate and attach it to the parking brake lever reassemble the brake drum or brake disc after replacing the wheel and tire lower the vehicle connect the rear cables to the equalizer routing them through the chassis in the proper order the fret cable to the brake control assembly and then connect it to the equalizer to check your repair engage the parking brake several times in order to check for movement on behalf of Auto MD I’m Barbara Terry for how to replace your parking brake cable
