AS Degree in Automotive Technology at LPC

AS Degree in Automotive Technology at LPC

This video will go over a sample pathway to complete the
Associate of Science (AS) Degree in Automotive Electronics
Technology at Las Positas College. Please keep in mind that this is one example and it is NOT
intended to be the only way to complete the requirements for the
AS degree in Automotive Electronics Technology. Before getting started, you will need the following materials.
1. AS GE flyer (for the current year) available in the online General
Catalog or in the Counseling Office (1616); 2. AS in Auto. Elec. Tech.—list of classes. The list of major
courses required for this AS degree for the current year is
available in the online General Catalog or Counseling Office (1616); 3. LPC’s online General Catalog. You can download the current
LPC’s college catalog so that you can view all the courses along
with their course descriptions and to see if there are any prerequisites. The next two slides show the Associate of Science Degree (AS)
General Education (GE) breadth requirements for LPC. Please
make sure to have the current year’s AS GE handout. This is from 2013-14. Notice all the sections: English Composition; Communication &
Analytical Thinking; Mathematics; Natural Sciences. Please notice that the Mathematics section does not have any
units attached to it. This means that IF you placed into a level above intermediate
algebra (above Math 55), then you have satisfied this
mathematics proficiency requirement. For example, if you placed into Math 45 (College Alegbra) then you do not need to complete
any math classes for the AS degree. This slide is the continuation of the AS GE breadth requirements.
Notice all the sections. Humanities; Social & Behavioral
Sciences, Kinesiology; Program-Based GE, and American Cultures. Please note that the American Cultures section does not have
any units attached to it. This means that the course listed in this
section can also be used to satisfy another GE area. For example, one class–Music 4– can be used to satisfy BOTH
Humanities and American Cultures requirements. Or in another
example, Anthropology 5 can be used to satisfy Social & Behavioral Sciences and American Cultures requirements. This list is from the online General Catalog. It shows the major
courses required for the AS in Automotive Electronics Technology. You can see that there is a total of 11 major courses required
(including the Program Based GE requirement–Math 71) for this
AS degree. You need to complete BOTH the AS GE courses and Major
courses plus complete a minimum of 60 degree applicable units
for your AS degree in Automotive Electronics Technology. What’s Next? Map out a sample 2 and ½ year pathway for the AS degree in
Automotive Electronics Technology. Key points to remember:
Certain automotive courses are offered only in alternating years
(check with the Automotive faculty); Maintain a balanced school schedule so that you are not taking
tough classes all in one semester; Work on time management skills. Keep track of upcoming
deadlines, don’t wait until the last minute to complete
assignments; Make time for yourself. To reduce stress, exercise, do yoga, etc. This is a sample pathway for the 1st year for the AS degree in
Automotive Electronics Technology. For the fall semester, you can take the listed courses for a total of
12.5 units. Auto 55 is a prerequisite (or a co-requisite meaning that you can
take it concurrently) for all the other Auto classes so you must
complete this class in your first semester. Kinesiology activity for 1 unit is included because this is an AS GE
requirement. For the spring semester, you can take the listed courses for a
total of 12 units. English 1A is an AS GE requirement. This sample pathway
assumes that you placed into English 1A. Auto 60A is a prerequisite for Auto 60B. Auto 61A is a prerequisite
for Auto 61B. Kin. activity, an elective unit, is listed in the spring semester to
reach the required 60 units for this AS degree. If you don’t want to take an kinesiology activity class, you can take
any other 1 unit elective class. This is a sample pathway for the 2nd year.
For the fall semester, you can take the listed courses for a total of
12 units. Auto 56 is a recommended class and can also be used as an
elective 2 units to reach the required 60 units for this AS degree.
If you don’t want to take Auto 56, you can replace it with another 2 unit elective class. For the spring semester, you can take the listed courses for a
total of 12 units. Math 55 is an AS GE requirement. This sample pathway
assumes that you placed into Math 55 (Intermediate Algebra).
Auto 67A is a prerequisite for Auto 67B. Please be aware that Auto 67A-67B are offered in alternating
years. In other words, Auto 67A-67B courses are not offered every
year. This is the continuation of the sample pathway for the 5th
semester of the 2 and ½ year plan. For the fall semester, you can take the listed courses for a total of
12 units. You can see that in this last semester, you are taking all GE
classes. Math 71A+71B are the program based GE requirement.
1 course that fulfills both the Humanities & Amer. Cultures req’ts. For example, Music 4 or 5.
1 course from the Natural Science list.
1 course from the Social & Behavioral Science list. All the courses are listed in order to ensure that you complete all
of your AS GE and major courses along with the minimum of 60
degree applicable units for the AS in Automotive Electronics Technology. This slide recaps the 2 and ½ year sample pathway for the AS in
Automotive Electronics Technology. Please note that in this
sample pathway, you will automatically have completed all the requirements for the Certificate of Achievement in Automotive
Technician as well. In this sample pathway, a total of 5 semesters (not including
summers) are used to complete all the requirements. In the 1st year, 24.5 units are completed (12.5 in fall and 12 in
spring). In the 2nd year, 24 units are completed (12 in both fall and
spring).
Then in the 5th semester, 12 units are completed. Petition for Spring 2016 graduation for the Certificate of
Achievement in Automotive Technician, in February 2016. You will petition for Fall 2016 graduation for the AS in Automotive
Electronics Technology, in September 2016. Both at LPC’s Admissions & Record’s office; OR complete the
“Request for the AA/AS Degree or Certificate” available online at:
http://www.laspositascollege.edu/admissions/forms.php. Valid Reasons Why It May Take more than 2 and ½ years to
complete this AS degree. Perhaps you started at Developmental English or Math (not at
English 1A or Math 55 level) so you need to include at least one
extra semester to get up to English 1A and/or Math 55 level. Perhaps you completed less than 12 units per semester due to
other commitments (e.g., work 30+ hours per week, family
responsibilities, life circumstances, etc.). Or perhaps you faced unexpected situations (e.g., the class that
you wanted was full so that you couldn’t take it in the semester
that you wanted or the class that you needed was not offered that semester). Don’t forget:
–Work on your time management skills. Know that you CAN achieve your goal for an AS degree in
Automotive Electronics Technology. As long as you are registered for at least one class in either fall
or spring semester, you have catalog rights to the requirements
that were listed when you started (e.g., you would not be held to additional requirements if they change). Come see a counselor in room 1616 if you have any questions!
Remember, we are here to assist you! Thank you.
