A Ride in the Google Self Driving Car

For a vehicle to drive itself, it needs to
know where it is in the world, and it also
needs to know what’s around it. Based on these
factors, it needs to be able to make smart
and safe driving decisions in the real world.
And once you get in the car, you start to
get a real feel for the way the technology
works and what it’s like in real driving situations.
So there are a few things that have to happen
before the car can start safely drive itself.
First, it has to figure out its location in
the world. So we use GPS, but GPS isn’t always
that accurate, which is why we rely on our
other sensors, like the laser, which picks
up on details in the environment that help
us identify a more precise location.
So think of the sensors as the car’s eyes
and ears. But with eyes that can see far off
into the distance and 360 degrees around the
car. And the great thing about having all
of these sensors is that they can talk to
each other and get cross-checked information
about the environment. So while we take in
a ton of information using our sensors, it’s
our software that really processes all this
and differentiates between objects. All these
objects are visible on the laptop that the
safety drivers use while testing the vehicles.
Based on what the vehicle senses and processes,
these objects will be represented by different
colored boxes. Cyclists will be red, pedestrians
yellow, and the vehicles will appear as either
green or pink. These boxes demonstrate the
processing that takes place within the software.
And think about the complexity here. People
look different, cars have different shapes
and sizes. Yet despite these nuances, the
software needs to classify these objects appropriately
based on factors like their shape, movement
pattern, or location.
For example, if there’s a cyclist in the bike
lane, the vehicle understands that this is
a cyclist, not another object like a car or
a pedestrian, so the cyclist appears as a
red box on the safety driver’s laptop. And
the software can also detect the cyclist’s
hand signal and yield to them appropriately.
When our engineers think about where the car
should drive and how, safety is always the
top priority. So the vehicle takes into account
many things, like how close it is to other
objects, or matching speed with traffic, or
anticipating other cars cutting in.
For example, as a passenger, it can feel a
little uncomfortable passing by a large vehicle
on the road. Our engineers have taught the
software to detect the large vehicles and
the laptop shows them as larger boxes on screen.
As our vehicle passes by a large truck, it
will actually keep to the farther side of
the lane and give ourselves a little bit more
space. And, we’ve also taught the vehicle
to recognize and navigate through construction
zones. The vehicle’s sensors can spot the
orange signs and cones early to alert the
car of any lane blockage ahead, and then we
can change lanes safely.
Another thing that’s really important is for
the vehicle to drive in a naturalistic way,
because when it’s natural, and the car abides
by social norms on the road, it’s also safer.
For example, at four-way stops, people typically
rely on eye contact to communicate whose turn
it is. And in our case, the vehicle inches
forward into the intersection to indicate
its intent.
So, my role as a safety driver is first and
foremost to keep the car, myself, and everyone
around me safe. And in addition to keeping
the car safe, I also provide detailed feedback
to the developers and let them know if the
car does anything that maybe I wouldn’t have
done personally. Maybe the car wasn’t assertive
enough in a lane change, or wasn’t fast enough
at a green light. We provide the detailed
feedback so they can fine-tune the whole driving
By getting out there and driving in the real
world, we’re getting a better understanding
of what exactly it’s going to take to improve
the safety and comfort and ease of transportation.
And that’s really what our project’s all about.

  1. That's not the law on four-way stops. The video explains that people decide who goes first based on eye contact…wrong. The driver on the right has right of way, if he stopped first, unless it is confusing as to who was there first. Then it's more of a who is kind enough to yield situation. My husband and I don't want anything to do with self-driving cars and he is an electrical engineer. He has told me that too much can go wrong.

  6. It's an amazing technology. Automated cars will enable new jobs for the service of those cars. The driving jobs might go away, but there will be more administration and maintenance jobs for those cars, because they will be in use 24/7.

  7. So a bad solder joint causes a bit to vanish between a processor and a sensor and the car heads into oncoming traffic. I don't want one and don't want to be surrounded by self driving cars. Over time who can trust the wiring, sensors, fiber optics etc. I don't know why this is being pushed on the American public. Oh forgot the sensor and processor suite will add $15000 additional to the cost of a car. Do we see 8 year leases in the future? The other thing is hackers will figure out how to command the car to drive itself to the chop shop of their choice.

  11. Is there an algorithm for detecting black ice while driving on a cold dark winter night, or command the appropriate torque profile to navigate a snow covered highway. I suggest you do some testing in snow & ice covered roads as well.

  12. This is going nowhere. It will come close but not enough. Driving requires human experience, anticipation, and emotion that only a living creature poseesses. And artificial intelligence cannot replicate. Example: if your driving with the family and a deer jumps out into highway and there's cars around you? Do you brake and nosedive the car risking the deer might come through the windshield? Do you Swerve? Right? Left?? Or floor the gas and brace for impact? These are questions that only a human with life experience, anticipation and emotion can answer.

  13. There's so many problems with this. First off, robots can turn evil, ESPECIALLY if they can learn! Robots are perfectionists!! Like, will their even be cops? What if you're trying to avoid a tail? Like if someone wants to kill you? Like witness protection? And what about driving in LA? What if you get to your destination, but no parking? What'll it do? What if there comes a time when we're at war and we DON'T have a destination? We just want to leave?! Cars were not meant to go from point A to point B!! They were to escape! Instead of making robots in charge, MAKE FLYING CARS ALREADY!!!! I'll NEVER trust a learning robot! Robots like phones, DS's, computers, they're small, so if you ever just are fed up, or it's being difficult (like malfunctioning) you can throw it away. The down side to waterproof technology is "What if someone hacked you?" Or "What if you don't wanna be seen?" (Like witness protection) You could throw it in water, or something and be done with it. DON'T let it be everything proof! Know limits! Sheesh, have you never seen ANY robot movie?! Robots can turn evil because you idiots teach them to learn! The problem with this, is robots are NOT like us!! SOME of us are protectionists, but NOT ALL! ALL robots are protectionists! Ugh, humans are SOOO stupid! Instead of making cures for cancer, or solving world hunger, we're making robots that are smarter than us! Will the car stop for an injured person on the free way? Will it stop for restroom breaks? Sheesh, QUIT THIS AND MAKE FLYING CARS!! It'll solve traffic at least!

Bloody Communist Globalist Google – In other words, "The Great thing about all these sensors, face recognition and AI, self thinking computers in everything…" Is the future will be so invasive, you can't go to the toilet without Google knowing if you had a number 1 or 2… As long as the people STOP funding projects like these, then we can maintain a little sanity and freedom. If things continued going this way, the Movie Wall-E would humorously and sadly, become a reality. 🙁

I have seen many russian videos.And how they driving, like they think they are in a Fast and Furious movie.Car companies must the 1st auto self driving cars to give in russians.Even Vin Diesel wouldn't filming an Fast and Furious in Russia except if producers would pay nothing for the damages because the town is fucked up already.

  22. Self driving cars are a complete fraud. Waymo's self driving car project is funded by DARPA which is part of the Department of defense. The self driving car fraud is helping inflate the stock value of Alphabet which owns Waymo and Google.

  24. I'm not buying this product I will drive myself. I personally do not trust goggle with my wellbeing and I think they are a terrible company so I'm not buying it.

  25. What if a police offcier signals to it to stop ?
    What if a prankster signals it to stop ?
    It must recognize the gsture, and also distinguish between officer and prankster. That is the a most tricky scenario I can think of. And also, what about a flat tire reaction.

  26. Laser, Gps, and other sensors can malfunction… Drivers must use critical thinking. This is something that I don't think some in a Lab on the west coast can figure out for someone in a mountainous area on the east coast. There is just too many things that can go wrong. As an American, I don't want to give up any more of my freedoms. Getting In a car that I'm not controlling is not setting right with me. I don't believe in A.I., Artificial Intelligence doesn't exist. There are a group of individuals(men and women)on the other side of every scream you are looking into controlling your interaction. Think!!!!!!!

  28. Self driving car is a myth. Whether are you holding the steering or leaving it, doesnt matter finally you are driving.

  29. Because we can probably send our cars to pick people up and companies need to monitor how many people they need too charge too pick up. Plus it will help keep track of who was at fault in case of an accident. RFID chips are in our futures as well. And eventually facial recognition software absolutely everywhere to report you if you don't have one(for the safety of others).

All we need to do really would be to put the cell phone for map viewing and it will capture images with camera and give feed back to the engine control unit by the cigarette lighter charging cable. Every car can have an auto pilot in 5 years. We can then switch off streetlights to save cities.
