2019 Technology Trends in Automotive, Medical, and Software Development


so again welcome everyone to infant software first webinar this year my name is Christopher Dodd and I will be hosting today’s session about the technology trends that you will need to keep an eye out for and 119 so what exactly are we going to talk about today well first up digital transformation I’m sure you’re not surprised and then we’ll move on to a summary of the lessons learned in twenty twenty eighteen last year now I’m sure most of you know that a lot of our customers here at inland software are innovative leaders in their respective markets and so working together with these companies we’re learning a lot about both the markets that these companies are operating in and the way that they are developing their products so first off we’ll take a look at the trends that our team saw playing out last year in the fields of product quality compliance and software development in general and then I will walk you through an analysis of the trends there are expected to shape the safety-critical technology markets in 2019 and with this analysis we will be focusing on medical devices and automotive systems development I will also talk about some of the the challenges that these developers will be facing this year and also the opportunities opened up by new technologies in these sectors so a few words on you know I was keeping as usual we are recording this session so you will be able to share it with your team afterwards and we will also have some time at the end for your questions so feel free to use the questions box on your good webinar control panel and if time permits I will try to answer everything on the air but in case we do run out of time don’t worry I’ll just take it offline and I’ll do my best to answer all your questions by email and there’s development right so that’s it for for housekeeping and now let’s you wanted a session so as I said I’m sure that none of you will be surprised at the mention of digital transformation here for some time now digitalization has been the overarching trend across the world and practically in all industries and this process doesn’t really show any signs of slowing down now obviously medical automotive technology were always fast-moving environments both are generally considered industries that are driven by innovation and for this reason they have historically contributed to technological development in general you know we’ve seen quite a few defining advancements in engineering in these materials in quality testing and in a variety of other fields all originating in the medical and the automotive industries but today the process of digital transformation seems to challenge even these highly innovative industries across sectors the importance of software is growing exponentially and software competences are today becoming the key to business maturity even in areas that have previously been unaffected or you know largely unaffected at least by software a good example of course is the automotive industry which started out as a purely hardware business if you remember the 40 model not a lot of software but today you could argue that it is largely software-driven and this is going to have a significant impact and both digital healthcare and the mobility industry are expected to be completely transformed by digitalization and one of the challenges today is that most developers operating in these sectors are finding it very hard to keep pace with with development and the reason for that is that digital transformation isn’t simply erased without existing and established practices of software development but rather it’s an innovation race that is based on software the way we are developing software is also undergoing huge changes and they wanted to keep pace with this as well and that process effects areas like product quality and standards compliance in regulated sectors right so throughout this webinar today I’m going to be asking you a few questions specifically five of them very simple and that’s because we’d like to learn more about our attendees to these webinars so let me start really first for now I will take let’s say 30 seconds to take your answers to four very simple questions first of all we’re interested in the size of your development team and I’ll be very grateful if you can serious one you that’s great thank you right just move back to the flight deck here so in general as kind of a backdrop to everything that we see unfolding and everything that I’m going to talk about here there seems to be a growing focus on product quality whether you’re talking about hardware software or service or which is actually more and more frequent all of these components at the same time quality is the key to customer satisfaction and so to ensure that high quality in 2018 infant software has seen a growing emphasis on risk-based thinking now risk-based approach of course was always important in areas like product engineering in systems development and in testing processes but today we are seeing the expansion of this risk management approach to the selection of both tools and suppliers so whether you’re talking about parts suppliers or tool vendors or the tools themselves there is increasing focus on mitigating risks and on increasing the transparency of quality measures and this has a two-fold effect on product development first is that qualification and validation processes are becoming more and more important we are seeing a growing scrutiny on the qualification of suppliers and the vetting of software tools to be used in in the development of regulated products and second we’re also noticing that quality management is becoming a key concern there seems to be a convergence between quality management systems QMS pion or product lifecycle management and ALM application lifecycle management tools so why is that well auditors need insights into the entire life cycle into procedures of production governance and documentation across the entire development life cycle of the product and basically they need to see guarantees the quality and process maturity throughout only when you use these together when you combine humans and PLM and ALM these are able to support these audit activities and they will be able to do so across the entire process of delivery and specifically delivery of service hardware and software components so that’s why there’s combination is is becoming very important in the area of software development agile has been the hottest topic for years I’m sure again this is not the surprise you and last year we have seen growing interest in strategies to scale the framework to scale a child this means that even the late adopters among enterprises are now jumping on the edge of bandwagon and the the innovators there are already passed into lending as well have of course moved on to DevOps practices and based on market feedback we can say that the careful adoption of frameworks like less large-scale scrum da D which is discipline – all delivery and of course safe the skeletal framework these can help large enterprises work as well while maintaining compliance so we are expecting much more interest in them coming from safety critical companies in 2019 and in the meantime we’re also expecting that more mature organizations will continue to embrace DevOps and another ways to the ultimate deployment so you know just to summarize all that the general trends that we see unfolding last year point to more focus on risks on quality and validation and meanwhile agility is still going strong and automation will help to keep pace with an accelerating market right so that’s about it for last year now before we want to current and future trends specific to the automotive and medical markets I’m going to ask you another question [Music] about your challenges challenges then in product development today you it’s great thank you all right so first up ultimately industry in the automotive industry we are seeing first of all changing patterns of car use and consumer behavior electric vehicles EVs are getting more and more popular and so are car sharing and mobility as a service solutions electric vehicles are naturally expected to become even more successful as consumer preferences shift further and due to environmental regulations and and volatile gas prices and variety of other factors as a second topic ADA systems advanced driver assistance systems are also developing fast these are actually paving the way for self-driving technologies which will fundamentally disrupt the mobility industry as we know it today but this is still a few years down the road experts right now don’t expect to see the first truly self-driving cars before 2021 the earliest and that I think is Ford’s announcement from last year even this is not yet birch work and that’s really the reason we had to talk about digital transformation earlier is that it also affects the automotive sector big time one way that experts like to describe this process is that cars are becoming super computers on wheels and if that’s true then today’s customers want these computers to plug into the cloud and to work with all their existing devices they are demanding a seamless experience across all of their gadgets which of course not includes cars and that’s why you see smartphone integration systems becoming very popular and that’s just the first step another far-reaching consequence of cars becoming these per computers on wheels is of course data and as we move from ADA’s to eventually truly self-driving cars will be seeing even more sensors being built into cars this will help the vehicle basically interpret and understand its environment but all the data that they generate will have to be managed and interpreted and that that’s a great technological challenge for automotive developers right now and that is one of the key reasons that sensor fusion is becoming a key topic here it basically means intelligently combining data from several sources and more data will enable new features in cars but it will also help open up new business opportunities so one key aspect assured here is the monetization of car data which might change the entire business model not just automotive companies but there the industry as a whole a few examples of this are that we’re already seeing predictive maintenance services better insurance policies and subscription plans over you know traditional car ownership but before automatic developers can really capitalize on the data generated by by cars there are a few other challenges both in terms of technology and in terms of regulation obviously the first and most important question here is that of data security so last year we have seen a few major data breach scandals I’m sure you remember Facebook and similar examples show that there’s a lot more to come in this respect Facebook’s obvious one not the only one and that’s why Europe’s GDP are the general data protection regulation is expected to be followed by tightening data security rules throughout the entire world apart from a few examples like China of course which for this reason are expected to get ahead in the competition for data driven technologies and another important question here will be the ownership rights to all that data you know if my car generates a lot of data who gets the benefit from that should it be the manufacturer of the car or is it my data so these challenges will have to be resolved before self-driving cars can really drove the primary challenges there are technological in nature right now and first there is connectivity there is a need for super fast and reliable wireless connections technologies like LTE and 5g are often cited here but developers are already working on innovating 6g connections even though 5g is still down the road 6g is is already being involved and these new types of connectivity will help connect our our cars of the future – pretty much help everything else on the road or off the road so this includes other course intelligent road signs and basically whatever else we can come up with to make driving safer and better experience and if you consider examples like predictive collision avoidance technology you can see that connectivity has a great potential to enhance driver safety basically it means that if my car is communicating with other cars it could see another car around the bend I can see you don’t road yet but it’s advancing fast it’s coming towards me and my car knows it so you can brake and take our safety measures right now finally there’s also the technological challenge of processing and interpreting these vast amounts of data and the consensus among industry experts today is that AI will be the key here artificial intelligence so let me talk a little bit more about that now artificial intelligence of course has been one of the most important buzzwords in 2018 across industries not just in the automotive sector and there’s a lot of excitement around technology and its potential these cases in in many industries so we will be hearing a lot more about AI this year as well in the automotive field developers expect to harness the power of AI to improve safety comfort and performance as an early step we’re seeing contextual AI being used to improve the accuracy of voice control systems so it seems like infotainment systems will be the first to benefit from this already we have driver monitoring systems in some luxury models and this is actually a feature it is seeping down into less like really luxury cars and their accuracy will be greatly improved as the artificial intelligence penetrates this area deep learning is another super important term in the development of autonomous cars today is used mainly to train the self-driving algorithms in simulated environments but if you combined better simulation testing with image recognition and image processing technologies then you will understand why deep learning will have a great role in delivering the south driving cars of the future there’s a few other technologies but before I do that let me just ask one more questions that I get to have a sip of water here this one is specifically about a on Tools you all right thanks for your responses so as I said there’s a few other technologies I want to talk about that experts believe will really impact the industry this year the first one of these is 3d printing which has been touted as a game-changer for years but in 2019 it seems like we will finally see the first fully 3d printed car hit the roads but this again is happening in China so this could be the start of a bigger process in the automotive industry and something to watch our pork the other technology here is blockchain which is still expected to bring significant changes to many industries but also the automotive sector and here is primarily through reducing counterfeiting in car parts but it could also have other applications to increase digital trust in the automotive industry we’re not yet sure where exactly blockchain is gonna be used but we can be pretty sure that it’s something that we’ll have to look out for it’s one of the those technologies that are expected to penetrate all industries and specifically the automotive sector this year there is another up-and-coming technology augmented reality AR which is expected to have a huge effect on the design prototyping manufacturing production and the maintenance of of course and some developers like Porsche a are already experimenting with AR they have provided augmented reality glasses to car mechanics and this way the manufacturer can provide remote assistance to the mechanic wearing glasses this of course is just the first use case example but there might be other and more advanced uses as the technology matures and last but not least and this time I really mean it because it’s a really important topic is the question of new correct architectures so if we’re going to build all this technology into modern cars the old structure that we used robust cars simply won’t cut it they won’t work for too long and this is why ultimately innovators like BMW have started thinking about modular architectures and using these to build new cars examples like their hierarchical and modular service-oriented architectures or SOA will help car companies standardized and modular eyes that’s the process that’s the direction that this process is taking and so this way they can optimize development effort and facilitate the reuse of components which again serves or efficiency and it will also help expand the use of agile in the industry with all the benefits of this framework other effects will include increasing the robustness of testing which of course is expected to benefit safety and security you right I have another question for you the one before the last we’re interesting what tools you’re currently using to manage requirements you thanks again for your responses so let’s now move on to the healthcare sector as in the automotive industry digital transformation has been a central topic in in healthcare – there seems to be a convergence process between lifestyle and actual real medical devices one good example here is the Apple watch but there are some other wearable devices there are good examples of this and this process has reached a new milestone with FDA’s clearing of the Apple watch for as a class to medical device so in 2019 we’re expecting to see a lot more examples similarly some medical devices are starting to look like everyday smart gadgets so there’s a in person but both ways both directions right now the main beneficiaries of this process are remote patient monitoring and telehealth solutions the underlying trends in digital healthcare are similar somewhat similar to those that we have seen in the automotive sector so first is that these gadgets are gathering a lot of health data and can provide services based on that data and second is that their connectivity capabilities lead to growing Internet and medical things and this shift towards data promises a revolution in digital healthcare provided that we can overcome the challenges that go with it those challenges primarily revolve around data security again but unlike an automotive development the benefits of providing access to patient data in the cloud have been recognized earlier in healthcare and this has led to the development of EHR of electronic health record systems and these are already in use in healthcare systems across globe and again blockchain could be the key here it could prove to be revolutionary because basically it has the potential to greatly enhance visual trust and as it finds its way its way into the digital healthcare sector data-driven healthcare could become a reality now obviously technologies like augmented reality and 3d printing found their way to healthcare as well but these are you know there are interesting use cases for for both and you know medical education and Diagnostics surgical procedures you name it but data rule seems to be the key here it seems to overshadow these advancements so why exactly is is it such a big deal what is it about data that makes it such a big deal well it’s because it fuels artificial intelligence so AI is actually the technology behind all of this that can really have a huge impact on digital healthcare but you need good data to train good AI for example once you have historical health data for large portions of the population these artificial intelligence algorithms can be trained to be smarter and more accurate accurate they they will be used in Diagnostics and predictive analytics and not just on the individual level but also in the larger population now imagine that you can pair that with medical imaging technology and image processing and then you will see how artificial intelligence could really help us identify medical conditions early on which of course will lead to better outcomes another interesting use case of AI is the modeling of biological and biochemical interactions in the body once we managed to refine this technology it will be super helpful for the pharmaceutical industry to drug testing role benefit promise another field that I will hugely affect is developing field of healthcare robotics so here again all a bit like in automatic development experts are developing autonomous robots that will be autonomous extend and they will be able to probably not fully autonomous but they will be able to bring healthcare to places where access to healthcare is currently limited also a I will actually contribute the development of other technologies that may seem less exciting at first probably but are actually really important developers are right now working on digital assistance and useful chatbots to be used in healthcare which could help patients scheduled appointment appointments and they might actually be able to carry out simple qualification off of patients basically diagnosing you know simple health problems for more efficient care right and we before I move on to the last topic for today I have one last question to you and as whether there is an ongoing evaluation of your own tools at your organization you perfect thank you so the last topic for today will revolve around software development so this process of healthcare becoming more technology centric and data centric leads to software development trends there are mostly similar to what we’ve seen in the automotive industry which is to say that agile is gaining traction in the development of digital healthcare technology and as over-the-air updates are are coming to the world of healthcare through wearable devices the adoption of DevOps is also expected to pick up so we’re seeing similar process developers of medical technology are already experimenting with accelerating software development while maintaining compliance and we’re seeing an increase use of quote management systems in conjunction with integrated ALM and established a chav frameworks the combination of these three has the potential to bring great benefits in terms of time to market product quality and auditability and it’s way easier to achieve compliance when you have an established framework helping you providing a structure to your development organization efforts now let me not get too deeply into the details of this because we have a great recording to help you understand how this works out in practice because last year in September 2018 we rounded up so overall the summary of our forecast for 2019 is that next year we’ll be all about digital transformation software competence is in data or respect to become the currency in both automotive and medical technology and yes there are still a lot of challenges around data security and privacy but these will have to be overcome very soon as the development of technology dictates a fast pace it is coming to us and we’ll have to deal with the the challenges and the obstacles on the way there for ultimately the medical product developers all this means that they will need to achieve maturity in software innovation and in combining software hardware and service components in their products right so that concludes our session for today and now let’s move on to your questions and we want to the car parts right so let me try to answer it short in short the way blockchain works is it’s basically a public ledger there’s let me let me say in advance that I’m no expert in blockchain but what I do know about this is gonna allow me to to answer your question so it’s basically a distributed ledger there are several nodes opposite of a network sharing information that is encrypted and you can basically maintain a full log of what this information was and whether it matches the information stored on other nodes of the network so once you can do that you can really follow data or let’s say a trail of an item from when it was first delivered produced board to the end of of the whole lifecycle now how exactly that is going to be used in the industry it’s not yet clear because you know well that’s basically why they’re not using it right now but they are moving to this and it seems like blockchain will have the easiest more simple way of putting to the use and and this in this question actually experts believe that this could be first used in 2019 so this is not as far off as a self-driving cars or you know real artificial intelligence as the way you know we see it in movies I hope
